Golden Eagles Drop Overtime Heartbreaker At Oakland, 79-75, Monday

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team played its first overtime game of the season, falling 75-79, at Oakland on Monday evening.

The Golden Eagles fall to 11-12 on the year and 4-8 in Summit League action, while Oakland improves to 19-5 overall and 11-2 in conference play. The Golden Grizzlies went 2-0 against the Golden Eagles this season but ORU still holds a 16-12 all-time advantage over OU.

Senior guard Mariana Camargo (Blumenau, Brazil) scored a new career-high 24 points and added six rebounds and six assists on the night. Junior forward Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.) posted her 23rd straight double-figure scoring game with 15 points, as she added six rebounds. Freshman forward Cristal Turner (Maidstone, England) recorded a new career-high in three-point field goals made, as she made four treys on the night for 12 points and senior center Monah Pegorari (Sao Paulo, Brazil) pulled down a game-high 11 boards for ORU.

Pegorari scored the first bucket for ORU at the 19:24 mark to tie up the game for the first time, while a three-pointer from freshman guard Georgia Jones (Manchester, England) put the Golden Eagles up 5-4 with 18:18 left in the first half. ORU then took a 5-0 run in the next minute to go up 10-4 with 17:05 to play. OU responded with a 4-0 run before Camargo and Voelker combined for four points to give the Golden Eagles its largest lead of the first half, 14-8, with 14:17 remaining. A 5-0 run from the Golden Grizzlies put it back to one-point game, as junior guard Amy Pryor (Norman, Okla.) fired back with two straight buckets putting ORU up 18-13 with 11:10 to go.

Three points from Camargo put the Golden Eagles up by six, 21-15, with 10:18 left, as OU's Stacey Farrell and April Kidd brought it back to a one-possession game with just over nine minutes in the half. Two free throws from Voelker and a jumper from Pryor put ORU back up, 25-19 but then a five minute Golden Eagles scoring drought allowed OU to crawl its way back and tie up the game at 25-all. A freshman forward Jordan Pyle (Mustang, Okla.) layup put ORU with a 27-25 lead, as the Golden Grizzles took a 4-0 run to go up 29-27. Camargo made the last bucket of the half with 25 seconds remaining and tied up everything at 29-29 to end the first half of action.

ORU started off the second half on 15-8 run in the first five and a half minutes of action to take its largest lead of the game, 44-37, with 14:36 remaining. The Golden Grizzlies fought back and tied it up for the sixth time, 44-44, with 13:24 to play. After a 48-all tie, the Golden Eagles took control of the game, leading through the next 10 minutes of action, going up by as much as six, 62-56. OU came back once again with an 8-0 run, taking a 64-62 lead with 58 seconds to go. A Pryor layup tied up the game once again with 32 seconds to play and two missed OU shots would send the game into overtime.

Voelker made a jumper in the first 35 seconds of overtime to give ORU its only lead in overtime, 66-64, as the Golden Grizzles took a 7-0 run during the Golden Eagles three-minute scoring, taking a 73-66 lead, with 2:17 left in overtime. Four straight points from Camargo brought it back to a one-possession game, 70-73, with 58 seconds remaining, before Kidd sunk three straight free throws to put OU up 76-70 with 39 seconds to play. A three-pointer from Jones brought it back to a three-point game, 73-76, while a Camargo layup took it to a two-point game, 75-77. Kidd came to the charity stripe one more time and sunk two more to secure the win for Oakland.

ORU shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the field, including 50.0 percent (7-14) from three-point range and 44.4 percent (4-9) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Golden Grizzlies, 36-35, but OU made 15 more free throws than ORU, as ORU committed 25 fouls compared to OU's 15.

Oakland shot 43.8 percent (28-64) from the field, including 66.7 percent (4-6) from behind the arc and 82.6 percent (19-23) from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles return home next weekend, hosting their first-ever Pink Zone Event on Saturday, Feb. 14, as ORU takes on IUPUI at 2:05 p.m. in the Mabee Center. The Golden Eagles than take on Western Illinois at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16 in the Mabee Center.
