ORU Baseball Drops Two at Missouri State on Sunday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Oral Roberts University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Sunday to Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. The Golden Eagles fell to 8-7 overall, while the Bears improved to 13-11 on the season.

Missouri State starter Tim Clubb (2-1) two-hit the ORU batters while striking out eight in the first contest of the day as the Bears cruised to a 10-1 victory.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the third inning of the opening game. Danny Duffy (Glendale, Ariz.) hit a one-out single through the left side, and Robert Barbosa (Dallas, Texas) walked in the next at-bat. Duffy advanced to third on a steal attempt, and PJ Sequeira (Petaluma, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to put ORU up 1-0.

The Bears answered in the bottom of the inning, as Trevor Rogers led off with a double to right field. After two strikeouts, Aaron Conway drove in Rogers with a triple to right field.

Missouri State added another run in the fifth, as Chris Playter led off with his first home run of the season to left field.

The Bears added three runs in the sixth inning off of three singles, a walk and a wild pitch, and tacked on another three runs the following frame off of two singles, two doubles, a walk and a balk.

ORU's Jerry Sullivan (2-3) suffered the loss after surrendering 10 hits and seven earned runs while striking out 10 batters.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game on Sunday. Dallas Hord led off with a double down the left field line, and Playter followed with a single to right field to score Hord. Two batters later, a ground out scored Playter.

Missouri State pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third inning after Ben Carlson led off with a triple and Brayden Drake reached on an error, scoring the lead-off hitter.

Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.) put the Golden Eagles on the board in the fourth inning with a one-out homer to left field. The long ball was Furmanek's fourth of the season.

Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) put ORU within a run with a solo shot to center field to lead off the top of the eighth, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles could get, falling 3-2.

ORU senior right-hander Andre Lamontagne (0-2) picked up the loss after scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs in seven innings with five strikeouts.

Missouri State's Buddy Baumann (5-0) earned the win after tossing a three-hit complete game, with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

The Golden Eagles return to action against No. 8 Texas at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Austin.
