Box Score TULSA, Okla. -
Oral Roberts University outscored Louisiana Tech by 21 points in the second half to break open a close game and collect a 92-71 victory over the Lady Techsters Saturday at the Mabee Center.
Kevi Luper led the Golden Eagles (4-0) with 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting, but the Adair native got plenty of help from her ORU wing mates. Jordan Pyle came close to a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, and a resurgent Bernadett Balla tallied 12 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
Jaci Bigham came off the bench to score 11 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 53.5% from the floor.
Louisiana Tech's top three scorers were all reserves. Angie Felton hit four-three-pointers and finished with 16 points, while Kiara Young and Jasmine Bendolph added ten points each.
The second half was the difference in the victory. ORU outscored the Lady Techsters, 54-33, in the final 20 minutes. Tech turned the ball over 11 times in the final period and lost the rebounding battle, 25-7.
The win is ORU's first over Louisiana Tech in program history. The Golden Eagles are now 1-6 all-time against the three-time National Champions.
An up-and-down pace in the first six minutes translated into an entertaining, high-scoring affair. But it was Louisiana Tech who gained the upper hand early on. A 10-0 Tech run, including a pair of three-pointers by Felton, gave the road team a 20-11 lead at the 13:41 mark.
ORU mounted their own rally to pull within a single possession. Two straight baskets from Pyle brought the Golden Eagles within three, at 22-19, with 10:39 left in the half.
But Tech regained control of the game and restored their double-digit lead. A three-point shot from Whitney Jones stretched the deficit to 33-23 with 5:39 on the clock.
But the home side mounted a 9-1 comeback to end the first half and head into the locker room tied. A buzzer-beater by Savanna Buck pulled the score even, at 38-38, bringing the Mabee Center crowd the life.
ORU shot 48.4% in the first half and got a team-high 12 points from Pyle. Luper added ten points and Balla, playing the best basketball of her young career, chipped in eight.
The Lady Techsters were led by Jones' nine point-first half output. Tech missed five of their final six field goal attempts in the half and shot 37.1% in the period.
The Golden Eagles finally retook the lead in the opening stages of the second half. A putback by Dominique Allen gave ORU a 41-40 edge with 18:51 to play. That lead grew to 48-43 on a Bigham three at the 16:38 mark.
The lead crested into double-digits with 13:39 to play on a beautiful spin-and-score by Balla, giving ORU a 58-48 lead. Another 8-0 ORU run, capped by a Pyle stick-back, stretched the gap to 66-51 with just 11:11 on the clock.
Much like Tuesday against North Texas, The Golden Eagles never allowed their opponents back into the game after building a sizeable lead. Another Bigham runner with 2:03 left pushed the lead to the 20-point mark, at 87-66, and the game was all but in the books.
ORU's 4-0 start is their first since 2007-08. The Golden Eagles are also 2-0 at the Mabee Center this season.
The Golden Eagles return to road action in their next game, a Tuesday match-up with the University of Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm CT.
