Golden Eagles Blast Southern Utah, 109-59

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. -

Oral Roberts University wasted no time shaking off the rust of a two-game losing streak, hammering Southern Utah University, 109-59, on Saturday afternoon. Kevi Luper led the Golden Eagle barrage with 31 points.

The junior from Adair, who earlier this week was named to the Naismith Trophy watch list, was 12-for-22 from the floor and 4-for-7 from three-point range. She added six rebounds and four steals.

Jaci Bigham also had a big effort for ORU, with 13 points and a season-high eight assists. Jordan Pyle added ten points to go with six rebounds and five steals.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 50.6% from the floor and forced 36 turnovers, a season-high. SUU (2-5, 0-1 Summit League) shot just 35.4%.

Carli Moreland led the Thunderbirds with 14 points on 8-for-10 free throw shooting. Hailey Mandelko added 13 for SUU.

ORU's 40-point margin of victory is their largest since a 101-66 win over Centenary on Feb. 19, 2011.

The Golden Eagles opened the game in an offensive malaise, missing eight of their first 12 shots. Southern Utah capitalized, taking a 10-8 lead on a DJ Norman three-pointer with 14:56 left in the opening half.

But the home side woke up midway through the half, throwing the first true haymaker of the afternoon with a 15-0 run. Bigham and Georgia Jones each hit from deep during the run, giving ORU a 27-12 lead with 9:19 on the clock.

Savanna Buck keyed an 8-0 spurt that sent the lead over the 20-point mark. The junior went for a lay-up and two free throws during the exchange, giving ORU a 37-17 edge at the 5:47 mark.

The onslaught didn't let up as the half wound down. A Luper three-point play made the score 48-29 at the intermission.

A 12-1 breakout early in the second half stretched ORU's lead over the 30-point mark. Pyle capped the rally with a beautiful running basket to make the score 69-39 at the 13:39 mark.

But the fireworks didn't stop there. Freshman Emma Gade scored to kick off a 9-0 run that ended with Luper hitting a three-pointer to give ORU a 41-point lead, at 83-42.

Late in the game, several freshmen made contributions and ensured the 40-point margin of victory. Gade finished with seven points, while Mariah Miles, Elisabeth Daniels and Delaney Scrivner each scored their first collegiate points.

All 14 Golden Eagles on the active roster scored at least two points in the win.

Saturday also marked the triumphant return of Amber Carver, who missed the last five games with a knee injury. The sophomore scored ten points and pulled down a pair of rebounds.

ORU has a week off before their next game, a Dec. 10 clash with Arkansas. The Golden Eagles and Razorbacks will face off at 7 pm CT in Fayetteville.
