Box Score TULSA, Okla. - Kevi Luper became the fourth player in Oral Roberts University women's basketball history to score 2,000 career points as the Golden Eagles defeated Oakland University, 62-53, on Saturday at the Mabee Center.
With the win, ORU improves to 12-7 (6-2 Summit League).
Luper is also the fourth player in Summit League history to cross the 2,000 point threshold. She led all players with 19 points in the game.
Sophomore Christian Key also stepped up in a big way, scoring a season-high 12 points in the win.
Luper and Amber Carver led ORU with five rebounds each, while Georgia Jones had a team-high six assists.
Sharise Calhoun led the Golden Grizzlies (8-9. 4-4 Summit League) with 14 points.
ORU held Oakland's leading scorer, Bethany Watterworth, to just 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting. The junior came into the game averaging over 18 points per game.
Oakland jumped out to a quick lead by forcing turnovers and hitting eight of their first 14 shots. A three-point play by Malika Glover gave the Golden Grizzles an 18-11 lead with 11:37 left in the half.
ORU took their first lead in over 13 minutes as Luper came alive. The junior hit a layup with 6:04 left in the period to give the Eagles a 23-22 advantage.
But the Grizzlies would carry the lead into the halftime locker room. A three-pointer by Watterworth gave the road side a 31-28 edge at the intermission.
It was Key who kicked it into high gear and turned the game on ORU's favor. The sophomore canned a three with 17:34 mark, giving the team a 35-34 lead. They would never trail again.
A 12-0 ORU run gave the home side a comfortable lead. Luper capped the spurt with a jumper that made the score 49-36 with 10:07 on the clock.
The shot put the junior from Adair on the cusp of a personal milestone, and it didn't take long for Luper to cash in. The two-time All-American came off of a screen to knock down a basket just a minute later, at the 9:12 mark, to go over the 2,000 point mark in her career.
Oakland whittled the gap down to five, at 56-51, with just 2:09 to play. But ORU would not relinquish the lead and earned a nine-point win.
Much like the Monday victory over Western Illinois, ORU stepped up their defensive intensity in the second half. Oakland shot 46.4% in the opening period but only 29.6% after halftime.
ORU has now won five straight regular season games over Oakland.
The Golden Eagles continue their home stand on Monday, Jan. 23, when they host IPFW. Tip time at the Mabee Center is scheduled for 7:05 pm CT.
