HUNTSVILLE, Texas. - Jordan
Parsons scored the golden goal in double-overtime to lift the
Oral Roberts University women's soccer team to its third overtime
victory of the season as the Golden Eagles defeated Sam Houston
State, 2-1.
ORU improved to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in Southland Conference
play, while the Bearkats fell to 6-8-1 overall and 4-4 in league
play.
The Bearkats struck first in the 49th minute as
Shannon Shields scored off the left post from six yards out,
following a forward header by Ashley Alonzo.
However, for the second time in as many matches, a Golden Eagle
was fouled in the box, setting up a Jennifer
Abernathy penalty kick. The senior had no problem converting
the attempt, scoring her eighth goal of the season to tie the game
with 15 minutes remaining.
In the first overtime period, the Bearkats controlled the ball
as they rattled off six shots. Fortunately, the roles reversed in
the second OT, setting up the game-winner by Parsons, as the senior
placed the header in the net for the goal.
Freshman Tahlor
Lyman was credited with the assist on the golden goal.
Parsons finished the match with three shots on goal to lead the
Golden Eagles, while Shields had two on target for the
Bearkats.
Maddie
Rhodes earned her seventh victory of the season as she sent
back five Bearkat shots, including a key save in the first overtime
period. Her counterpart, Kylie Hambleton, recorded seven saves in
the loss.
The Golden Eagles will close the regular season with a
three-match conference home stand, starting with Central Arkansas
at 7 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, ORU hosts Northwestern State at 1
p.m. and close the season with a date against McNeese State on Nov.
