Brandy, Trujillo shine in doubleheader sweep of Harvard, 6-4 and 4-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Tulsa, Okla. - A three run double by Matt Brandy in the first game, and a nine-strikeout performance by Guillermo Trujillo in game two, helped the Oral Roberts University baseball team snap a four-game losing skid in style as the Golden Eagles swept Harvard on Friday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Golden Eagles came from behind in the first game to top the Crimson, 6-4, and held off Harvard for a 4-3 victory in game two.

ORU recorded its first doubleheader sweep since 2012 and improved its overall record to 3-6, while Harvard dropped its first two games of the season.

Brandy finished the two games with three hits, three runs batted in, three runs scored, two walks and was hit by a pitch. Joey Migliaccio had a pair of hits in the first game, while Jose Trevino recorded a single in game one and a double in the second contest.

Colin Hightower (1-1) earned the victory in the first game in relief as he allowed one hit in two innings. Jordan Romano entered in the ninth and struck out two, earning his first save of the season. Kurt Giller got the start in game one, striking out six in four innings of work.

Trujillo started on the mound in the second game, striking out nine Harvard batters while giving up five hits and one run. His nine punch outs in the game were a career high for Trujillo, and it was the first nine-strikeout game by someone other than Alex Gonzalez since Drew Bowen waived nine on May 11, 2012, against IPFW.

Nathan Garza (1-0) pitched the final two innings of the nightcap and struck out five to earn the victory.

Jack Colton and Carlton Bailey led Harvard with four hits each, while Mike Martin and Steve Dill each had three hits.

Game 1

Harvard jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the Crimson scored a pair of runs in their half of the first and second innings. Colton scored the first run of the game as Brandon Kregel grounded out to short, allowing Colton to cross the plate. Ethan Ferreira followed with a single up the middle to plate Martin.

In the top of the second, Colton drove in the first run of the inning with a single off the glove of Giller to score Mitch Klug. The next batter Bailey drove a single to center to score Kyle Larrow, extending the Crimson lead to 4-0.

The Golden Eagles began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Migliaccio hit a grounder through the middle to drive in Athony Sequeira.

ORU inched closer in the bottom of the third as Trevino doubled to right field to score Brandy and Emmanuel Forcier, cutting the Harvard lead to 4-3.

A couple of Harvard errors in the bottom of the seventh proved costly for the Crimson. Audie Afenir started the inning by drawing a walk and was replaced by Derrian James as a pinch runner. Austen Colt and Logan Domenico each reached on errors to load the bases, and set up a three-run double off the bat of Brandy into the right field corner to give ORU the 6-4 victory.

Game 2

In the second game, it was Harvard that would battle back from an early deficit. The Golden Eagles struck quickly with a two-run first inning as Trevino singled to center to score Forcier, and Boss drove in Brandy with a single to right, his first RBI of the season.

Two innings later, the Golden Eagles expanded their lead to 3-0 as Domenico scored on a fielder's choice on a Sequeira ground ball to second.

Much like Sequeira's fielder's choice in the third, Harvard plated its first run in the top of the fourth as Matt Hink reached on a fielder's choice with Kregel scoring on the play to cut the ORU lead to 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, the Crimson tied the game at three runs apiece. Martin led the inning off with a single, and after he swiped two bases, scored on a wild pitch by Garza. Dill then singled back up the middle that scored Kregel for the second time in the game to make the contest all square at three.

Fortunately, a wild bottom of the eighth gave the Golden Eagles the victory. Brandy was struck by a pitch to start the inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. Just between the first pitch to Sequeira with one-out, Harvard pitcher Danny Moskovits was called for a balk, allowing Brandy to cross the plate for the winning run.

Garza struck out two Harvard batters in the top of the ninth to seal the 4-3 victory.

The same two teams will take the field in a second doubleheader in as many days on Saturday, with game one schedule for noon. There will be approximately 30 minutes between games one and two.
