Kevin Obanor put together an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double and the Oral Roberts men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its home opener taking down Rogers State, 93-63, Saturday night at the Mabee Center.
The Houston, Texas, native was efficient all night pacing the Golden Eagles offense with his inside presence and mid-range game, while
Max Abmas and
RJ Glasper each chipped in 17 points giving the home side its first win of the season.
Abmas got the scoring started knocking down a triple and ORU build a 9-2 advantage after a pair of free throws from Obanor.
Carlos Jürgens converted all three free throws on a long foul as the lead stretched to double figures, 14-4.
Obanor capped another big run for the home side, this time a 10-0 burst that put the Golden Eagles ahead, 28-12, with five minutes to play before halftime. The Hillcats clawed back to get the deficit into single digits, but a pair of Abmas free throws put ORU in front by 11 at the break, 39-28, as the sophomore poured in 14 points in the first half.
In the middle stages of the second half, RSU connected on a shot from distance closing the gap to seven, 54-47. Glasper quickly matched the shot knocking down a triple of his own to regain the double-digit margin for ORU that kick started a 19-3 run over the next six minutes.
The Golden Eagles advantage swelled as high as 30 on back-to-back 3-pointers by
Justin Lovvorn in the closing minutes before ending 93-63 in favor of ORU, finished off on an emphatic dunk from
D'Mauria Jones.
Turning Point
After the Hillcats posted a mini run to get within seven points at the 12:28 mark of the second stanza, the Golden Eagles took charge and held their opponents to 1-of-7 shooting and three turnovers covering the next six minutes pushing out to an 18-point cushion.
Individual Leaders
Oral Roberts: Obanor tallied the 16th double-double of his ORU career, and second against RSU, in just 25 minutes of action.
Rogers State: Destin Eke led three Hillcats in double figures with 13 points and added nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Inside the Box Score
- Obanor converted 7-of-8 attempts at the free-throw line to go with a 5-of-9 shooting effort to a season-high 18 points. He is the first ORU player to record a double-double this season.
- Abmas matched his season best recording 17 points for the second-straight outing and added a team-leading four assists and three steals.
- Glasper registered his best offensive outing of the young season hitting 6-of-9 from the floor on his way to 17 points, while
DeShang Weaver added 10.
- Lovvorn entered the game in the final minutes and drilled all three of his attempts from long range totaling nine points helping the team shoot 45 percent from distance.

- ORU had four players reach double-digit scoring on the way to a season-high 93 points and a win in its home opener for the 10th-straight year.
