TULSA, Okla. – After getting out to a hot start, the Oral Roberts volleyball team could not hold off Summit League-leading Kansas City in a four-set loss (25-17, 19-25, 18-25, 24-26) Saturday evening from the Cooper Aerobics Center.
The Golden Eagles got off to a blistering start hitting at a .324 clip in the opening set and began on an 8-4 run, including four-straight points. The advantage stretched to six on back-to-back blocks by
Sakira LaCour and ORU kept the Roos at bay claiming the frame, 25-17.
Kansas City flipped the script in set two building an 8-4 margin behind a 4-0 burst of its own and later used a 6-1 run taking an 18-11 lead. A string of service errors by both teams moved the Roos to a 24-15 advantage.
Aixa Vigil buried three-straight kills and ORU forced the Roos into an error fighting off four-straight set points, but could not pull through falling 25-19.
Kaia Dunford and Vigil combined for 10 kills in the frame on 18 swings totaling all but one of the Golden Eagles kills.
ORU jumped to a 7-3 lead in the third set with a 5-0 run getting a service ace by
Sarah Thiessen followed by swings from
Jaxie Wakley and Vigil. KC fought back to even the score and moved in front, 11-10, on an 8-3 spurt. The Golden Eagles were able to tie the action twice, but the Roos put together four-consecutive points for a 16-13 cushion and held on to win the set, 25-18.
The fourth set was back and forth the entire time featuring 17 tie scores and eight lead changes. LaCour and Vigil combined for a block giving ORU an 11-8 advantage and the home side had another three-point cushion, 17-14. The next six points went to KC before the Golden Eagles recorded a 3-0 run to tie the score, 20-20. Dunford put ORU in front, 23-22, but the Roos got four of the next five points and used a block to finish off the match, 26-24.
Inside the Box Score
- Vigil returned to form Saturday as the junior paced ORU with 17 kills on 34 swings hitting .294 and added 13 digs for a double-double. She also registered a solo block and two block assists.
- Dunford tallied another double-double with the freshman posting 11 kills and 13 digs.
- LaCour was dominant at the net totaling a solo block and five block assists along with two kills and four digs.
- Thiessen paced the Golden Eagles with 14 digs and matched Jeslyn Spencer with two service aces.
- Bryanne Soares led the team with 18 set assists, while Sylvia Lawson added 14 assists and five kills coming on 13 attempts.
