SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Oral Roberts men's soccer team was picked second in the Summit League men's soccer preseason coaches' poll, which is voted on by the league's six head coaches, with 22 overall votes and two first place votes, it was announced Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles, who have won two straight regular season titles, including an outright crown in 2022, tallied the remaining two first-place votes and finished with 22 points, two votes shy of league favorite Denver. ORU finished a point ahead of the Pioneers in the regular season standings a season ago, finishing 7-1 with 21 points, while DU went 6-0-2 and totaled 20 points.
DU, who climbed as high as No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Division I rankings a season ago, won its fourth consecutive Summit League Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament opening-round game for the second straight season in 2022. The Pioneers received votes in the 2023 United Soccer Coaches' preseason top 25 poll.
Omaha finished third in the regular season standings under the direction of first-year head coach Donovan Dowling and that is where the Mavericks were tabbed again in the preseason poll. Omaha went 5-2-1 in league play a season ago and tallied 17 points in the poll.
Kansas City was picked fourth for the second straight year, earning 13 points in the poll. The Roos reached the Summit League Tournament title game as the No. 4 seed after knocking off top-seeded ORU 3-2 in extra time.
St. Thomas earned the fifth spot with eight points, while affiliate member Western Illinois rounded out the poll in sixth after collecting six points. This will be the final season for the Leathernecks' men's soccer program in the Summit League.

#SummitMSOC Preseason Notes
- Three of the Summit League's six individual award honorees are back for the 2023 regular season with Denver bringing back Midfielder of the Year Ben Smith and Newcomer of the Year Isaac Nehme, while Oral Roberts will be led by Ryan Bush, who has garnered three of the last four Coach of the Year honors (2019, 2021 and 2022).
- Smith and Nehme helped the Pioneers' defense record a NCAA-leading 13 shutouts and a 0.68 goals against average, which ranked seventh nationally, in 2022.
- Nehme recorded 10 of those shutouts between the pipes and combined for two more during his freshman season. His 10 individual shutouts were tied for the fifth most in a single season in league history.
- Denver has won nine of the past 10 Summit League Tournaments, including the 2022 version that the program hosted. The Pioneers posted shutout victories over Omaha and Kansas City en route to the title.
- DU went on to win its NCAA Tournament first round game at home against San Diego, 1-0, before falling to Duke during second round play. It marked the second straight year the Pioneers won an NCAA postseason match.
- Denver midfielder Sam Bassett is the league's top-returning goal scorer after netting seven in 2022. DU teammate Holger Olsson also returns and was among a pack of five players from around the league to score six goals in 2022.
- Olson, Omaha forward Mathis Pilon St-Louis and Oral Roberts midfielder Shane Anderson also return from that quintet of six-goal scorers.
- Anderson is the league's top returning point scorer after he added a league-best nine assists to go with his six goals in 2022.
- Anderson spearheaded an ORU offense that was the only one in the league to put more than two goals per match, averaging a league-high 2.6 in 16 contests.
- The Golden Eagles will have to replace Goalkeeper of the Year Jeremy Coste, who helped anchor an ORU defense that yielded only 18 goals a season ago (1.13/g).
- Pilon St-Louis was the top goal scorer for an Omaha squad that was under the direction of first-year head coach Donovan Dowling in 2022. The Mavericks finished 5-2-1 in league play.
- Kansas City's Christian Koffi was one of the more dynamic newcomers in the league in 2022 as he led all players with 64 total shots with 28 of those being on frame. He put away five of them and also added five assists to share the team lead in points with the now graduated Kazuki Kimura.
- St. Thomas enters its third year as a Summit League member and accrued a pair of conference wins in each of its first two seasons. Senior goalkeeper Tucker Mann returns for the Tommies and had one of the best individual performances of the 2022 season when he made a career-high 12 saves in a 0-0 draw with Denver.
- Western Illinois will embark on one final Summit League men's soccer campaign in 2023. The Leathernecks will move to the Ohio Valley Conference next season, but will be under the direction of the league's all-time winningness coach in Dr. Eric Johnson. Johnson has won 185 matches since 1997 with 77 of those coming in league play.
