SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Mike Srp pitched seven
strong innings in game one and Trey Rice hurled a complete game
six-hitter in game two as Texas-San Antonio swept a doubleheader
from Oral Roberts, winning 5-4 and 3-1, Saturday at Wolff
Stadium.
Srp (1-2) limited ORU (1-2) to three runs on four hits in his
seven innings of work in the opener. Rice (2-1), who earlier this
season defeated Oklahoma, surrendered a run in the first inning of
game two, then settled in and held ORU's offense in over the next
eight innings.
Game one started as a pitching duel between Srp and ORU's Dallas
Martin (0-1). But the Roadrunners (3-6) broke through for four runs
in the fourth inning, all with two outs. Cory Horton and Aaron
Semper had consecutive RBI singles and Danny Phillips followed with
a two-run double for a 4-0 UTSA lead.
Srp held ORU scoreless until David Castillo hit a three-run
homer in the top of the sixth, making it a 5-3 game. Josh Lex added
a two-out solo home run in the top of the ninth, but UTSA reliever
Klae Boehme coaxed Eric Keller into a game-ending ground out.
ORU jumped on Rice in the first inning of game two. Matt
VanDerBosch scored a Dennis Bigley groundout for a 1-0 ORU lead.
But the lead was short-lived.
UTSA touched ORU starter Kris Kline (1-1) for two run in the
second, taking a 2-1 lead. Kline retired the first two batters but
after Kline allowed a walk and a single, J.R. Voyles laced a
two-run double.
The Roadrunners added another run in the sixth on a Robbie Johns
solo home run for the final margin.
Though he took the loss, Kline was solid in his first ORU start.
The Tulane transfer allowed three runs on seven hits over six
innings, striking out four and walking three.
VanDerBosch had four hits on the day, and Lex went 3-for-7 with
a double and a homer.
The Golden Eagles and Roadrunners conclude their three-game
series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
