TULSA, Okla. -- Oral Roberts scored three runs
in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 4-2 win over
McNeese State in the Lake Area Classic, Saturday at Cowboy
Diamond.
ORU snaps its four-game losing streak and improves to 2-4 on the
season. McNeese State drops to 8-6.
Dennis Bigley (1-1) was strong in his second start of the season
for ORU, allowing just two hits and one run in 6.1 innings of work.
The sophomore right-hander also fanned five and walked three.
ORU took a 1-0 lead in the second on Ryan Welborn's bases loaded
walk. That was the only scoring either team would do until ORU
broke through in the seventh as Bigley and McNeese State starter
Rusty Begnaud locked up in a pitcher's duel.
Josh Lex had an RBI single in the seventh, and the Golden Eagles
took advantage of two wild pitches, and error and three walks to
score their other runs.
McNeese scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh and
added another in the ninth for the final margin.
Junior Rene Recio earned the first save of his career by
pitching 2.2 innings of relief and striking out five. He allowed
two hits and one run, but did not walk a batter. The Golden Eagles
had just seven hits, but drew five walks from five Cowboy pitchers.
Scott Modeste had a pair of hits for ORU to lead the way.
ORU concludes play in the Lake Area Classic when they battle SEC
power Georgia, 11 a.m., Sunday.
