TULSA, Okla. -- Ryan Welborn knocked in the
tying run in the ninth and later scored the game winner as Oral
Roberts rallied past Southwest Missouri State for a 2-1 win,
Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, ORU (5-7) rallied
behind some clutch hitting and a key defensive mistake by SMS
(7-4). Scott Campbell led off with a single against reliever Shaun
Marcum (0-2), and later stole second base as Andy Hargrove struck
out. Welborn then laced a single over leftfielder Clay Wheeler's
head, tying the game at one.
Pinch hitter Ande Collup singled Welborn to third. Centerfielder
Matt VanDerBosch tapped the ball up the first base line for a
single, and SMS first baseman Scott Nasby dropped the throw in a
collision with VanDerBosch, allowing Welborn to score the winning
run from third, making a winner out of Justin Ramsey (1-0) who
threw 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Prior to the ninth, the game was a pitching duel between ORU's
Taylor McIntyre and Southwest Missouri's Rick Wilson. The lefties
held each opposing offense in check until the Bears broke through
for an unearned run in the seventh.
McIntyre, a freshman making his first collegiate start, was
solid in his 6.1 innings of work, allowing six hits and one run
while striking out four and walking three. Wilson was equally
impressive, scattering four hits over seven innings, striking out
eight and walking three.
Grant Plumley led ORU's offense with a 3-for-4 day, while Dennis
Bigley went 2-for-4. Marcum, playing shortstop, and Chad Woodmansee
each collected two hits for SMS.
