TULSA, Okla. -- Ryan Knippschild hurled a
complete game seven-hitter in leading No. 17 Kansas to a 9-2 win
over Oral Roberts, Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Knippschild (5-1) held ORU's offense in check one day after the
Golden Eagles (6-9) touched Jayhawk pitching for 11 hits and seven
runs. He struck out five and walked just one, retiring 13 of the
last 14 batters.
ORU took a 1-0 lead on Scott Campbell's RBI single in the first,
but Kansas (18-6) exploded for four runs off ORU starter Dennis
Bigley (1-2) in the second and three more in the third. Kevin
Wheeler hit a solo home run and the Jayhawks took advantage of two
ORU errors and a two-run single by Brandon Shepard for a 4-1
lead.
The Jayhawks made it 7-1 with three runs in the third. Casey
Spanish had an RBI single and Travis Metcalf followed with a
two-run homer.
With the lead, Knippschild settled in and worked around a couple
of early jams. The Golden Eagles collected three straight singles
in the third, but managed just one run as Knippschild induced a
pair of ground ball outs. ORU threatened again in the fourth, but
Knippschild got a fly ball and a fielder's choice to end the
threat.
Kansas scored single runs in the fifth and seventh for the final
margin.
Campbell knocked in both runs for ORU, finishing 1-for-4. Six
other players had one hit each for the Golden Eagles.
Wheeler was 2-for-3 with two RBI to Kansas' 11-hit attack.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they host Missouri
Southern, 3 p.m., Wednesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
