TULSA, Okla. -- Justin Ramsey hurled 4.2
shutout innings of relief, and Oral Roberts rallied from an early
5-1 deficit for an 11-5 win over Wichita State, Tuesday at J.L.
Johnson Stadium.
The win is the fifth straight for ORU and improves the Golden
Eagles to 11-9 overall. Wichita State drops to 14-9 with the
loss.
Ramsey (2-0), a junior right-hander, came on with two outs in
the top of the third and Wichita State ahead 5-1. He immediately
retired the first batter he faced and limited the Shockers to just
two hits before leaving with one out in the eighth. Ramsey never
faced more than four batters in any inning and retired the side in
order in the fourth and sixth innings.
While Ramsey was mowing down the Shockers, ORU's offense
gradually heated up. David Castillo hit a solo home run in the
third, trimming Wichita State's lead to 5-2. The homer was
Castillo's seventh of the season and also gives him home runs in
each of the last four games.
ORU exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth
innings. First baseman Andy Hargrove belted a long two-run homer in
the fourth off WSU starter Steve Uhlmasiek. Ryan Welborn added and
RBI single and Castillo had a sacrifice fly for a 6-5 lead.
In the fifth, Welborn and Scott Modeste had RBI singles, Kevin
Lamb plated a run with a fielder's choice and another run scored on
an error as ORU grabbed a 10-5 lead.
The Golden Eagles added their final run on an RBI single by Matt
VanDerBosch in the eighth for the final margin.
ORU collected 10 hits for the game, with Welborn going 2-for-5
with two RBI and three stolen bases while VanDerBosch had a pair
hits and two walks.
Reliever Tommy Hottovoy (1-1) took the loss for Wichita State,
allowing four runs in one inning of work.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they start a three-game
series with Northeastern, 7 p.m., Friday at J.L. Johnson
Stadium.
