TULSA, Okla. -- Oral Roberts' ninth inning
rally fell short as Northeastern held on for an 8-6 win over the
Golden Eagles, Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The loss snaps ORU's six-game winning streak and drops the
Golden Eagles to 12-10 overall. Northeastern improves to 4-5 with
the win.
Down 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, ORU plated a run on
an error and another on an RBI fielder's choice by Scott Modeste.
Dennis Bigley then doubled Modeste to second with two outs, but
Kevin Lamb grounded out to end the game.
The contest was back and forth until Northeastern took a late
lead. The Huskies showed remarkable resilience throughout the game,
answering every ORU rally in the following half inning. The Golden
Eagles, meanwhile, couldn't capitalize on several opportunities,
leaving 12 runners on base.
Northeastern grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and ORU
tied it on Ryan Welborn's RBI double in the bottom of the third.
The Huskies came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth
for a 3-1 lead.
Lamb scored on an error in the fifth to make it a 3-2 game, and
Matt VanDerBosch scored on a passed ball in the sixth, tying the
game at three. But again Northeastern answered, taking a 5-3 lead
with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
After ORU trimmed Northeastern's lead to 5-4 in the bottom of
the seventh, the Huskies plated three runs in the top of eighth for
an 8-4 lead. First baseman Tim Bush laced a two-run single to
highlight the scoring for NU.
Justin Hedrick (2-0) picked up the win for Northeastern,
allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings with nine
strikeouts and six walks. Bush picked up his firsts ave of the
season with 2.1 solid innings of relief. Alex Chalfant (0-1) was
the loser for ORU, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an
inning.
Kris Kline started for ORU and went 5.1 innings, allowing three
runs on six hits, but he walked five batters and struck out
none.
Welborn led ORU with a 4-for-4 effort. VanDerBosch finished
3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, and Lamb went 2-for-4.
ORU and Northeastern wrap up their three-game series at 12 noon
on Sunday.
