RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Junior David Castillo
knocked in the tying run and scored the go ahead run and ORU
received 4.2 scoreless innings of relief from Sean Sorrow and
Taylor McIntyre to lead the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 win in action at
the RBI Tournament, in Riverside, CA.
In the sixth, Matt VanDerBosch singled, stole second and scored
on a RBI single by Castillo to tie the game at three. Castillo
moved to third on an opposite field single by Andy Hargrove and
scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Lex to put Oral Roberts (4-5) up
4-3.
The Golden Eagle bullpen held the lead as Sorrow (1-0) tossed
2.1 scoreless innings of relief, leaving with two outs and the
bases loaded in the seventh. McIntyre, a freshman, relieved and
struck out pinch hitter Sam Battle to snuff the rally. McIntyre
then retired the Gaels (7-9) in the eighth and ninth innings,
recording four strikeouts, to earn his first save.
St. Mary's got on the board first, in the second inning as Nick
Conte led off with a single and stood on second base with two outs.
Adam Bellows hit a towering triple to right center field, scoring
Conte for a 1-0 SMU lead.
ORU knotted the game at one in the fourth as Grant Plumley led
off with an infield single, and Van Der Bosch followed with a drag
bunt single to put runners at first and second with nobody out.
Castillo followed with a double down the third base line, scoring
Plumley to tie the game, and Lex gave the Golden Eagles the lead
with a RBI single to left.
Oral Roberts' starter Dennis Bigley could not hold the lead,
surrendering two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out
in the fifth. Bryan Byrne smashed a two-run double to put St.
Mary's back on top 3-2.
Castillo finished the evening 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI,
while Lex also knocked in two runs going 1-for-3. SMU starter Matt
Yourkin (0-4) took the loss.
The RBI Tournament continues tomorrow as Oral Roberts and St.
Mary's play at noon, with the host UC Riverside Highlanders facing
Oral Roberts at 4 PM.
