TULSA, Okla. -- Dennis Bigley allowed just one
hit over seven innings and Oral Roberts pounded out 14 hits en
route to a 14-5 win over Texas-Pan American, Saturday at J.L.
Johnson Stadium.
One week after limiting then-No. 7 Miami to just three hits over
nine innings, Bigley (3-2) threw just 69 pitches in his seven
innings against Pan Am, allowing only two runners to reach base.
Bigley retired 12 of the 23 batters he faced, including a stretch
of 13 straight. He struck out just two without a walk, but again
used his over powering fastball to induce UTPA's batters into
routine fly ball outs.
The Golden Eagles (16-14) took advantage of shaky pitching by
UTPA (18-21) throughout the game, especially early on. Broncs
starter Ricky Anderson (1-2) walked five batters in the first
inning and allowed two hits as ORU jumped to a 3-0 lead.
ORU added two more runs in the second. Grant Plumley knocked in
a run with a single and later scored on an error by Anderson,
giving ORU a 5-0 lead.
After Ryan Welborn scored in the third on a throwing error for a
6-0 ORU lead, the Golden Eagles plated four runs in the fourth.
Scott Campbell and Herman Galatas had RBI doubles, and Plumley
drove in a pair with a single as ORU went ahead 10-0.
Kevin Lamb hit a two-run home run in the fifth and the Golden
Eagles scored to more in the seventh for a 14-0 lead before UTPA
finally broke through for five unearned runs off the ORU bullpen in
the eighth.
Plumley led ORU at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three RBI. Lamb
was 3-for-4 with three RBI and homered for the second straight
game. Matt VanDerBosch was 3-for-6, raising his season average to
.367. He also had an RBI, scored a run and stole two bases.
The Golden Eagles and Broncs conclude their series at 1 p.m. on
Sunday.
