TULSA, Okla. -- Texas-Pan American scored five
times in the top of the ninth inning, rallying from a 6-2 deficit
for a 7-6 win over Oral Roberts, Sunday at J.L. Johnson
Stadium.
The Broncs (19-21) took advantage of two Golden Eagles (16-15)
errors, a walk and a hit batter in the ninth to win the rubber game
of the 3-game series. UTPA won the opener 8-7 in 11 innings on
Friday.
Leading 6-2 entering the ninth, the Golden Eagles came apart.
Alex Chalfant dominated the Broncs after coming on in relief with
one out in the fourth, allowing just one hit and striking out six
through the eighth inning. But Chalfant issued a leadoff walk to
Ben DiOrio and Matt Eichel reached first on an error by first
baseman Andy Hargrove, who dropped a throw from Chalfant. T.J.
Gilmer then singled home pinch-runner Otis Powers from third,
trimming ORU's lead to 6-3.
Dallas Martin (2-5) replaced Chalfant and retired Jerome McCoy
for the first out. Martin then loaded the bases by hitting Luis
Alamia, and Marco Garza followed with a two-run single, making it a
6-5 game. Tony Ortiz reached on an error by shortstop Grant
Plumley, loading the bases again and following a fly ball out,
Bruce Kennedy -- who Friday plated two runs in the 11th off Martin
-- did it again, slapping a single to center scoring Alamia and
Garza for a 7-6 lead.
The Golden Eagles went in order in the ninth against John Lopez,
who registered his first save, making a winner out of reliever Juan
Saenz (1-0), who pitched a perfect eighth.
UTPA took a 2-0 lead in the first on Kennedy's two-run double.
ORU made it 2-1 as David Castillo singled home a run in the bottom
of the first. The Golden Eagles scored three times in the fourth
off UTPA starter Tommy Sorden for a 4-2 lead. Scott Campbell had an
RBI double, Herman Galatas plated a run with a ground out and
Campbell later scored after Kevin Lamb got caught in a rundown
between first and second before being tagged out after Campbell
scored.
ORU scored twice in the for a 6-2 lead. Lamb drew a bases loaded
walk and Ryan Welborn drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Castillo, Hargrove and Dennis Bigley each had two hits for ORU.
Kennedy finished 2-for-5 with four RBI to lead UTPA.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they host Arkansas, 7
p.m., Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
