VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Oral Roberts hung on for a
9-8 win in game one and rallied for a 5-4 victory in game two as
the Golden Eagles swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader
from Valparaiso, Saturday at Bauer Field.
The Golden Eagles (18-16, 2-0) led 9-2 with two outs in the
ninth innings of the opener, then had to withstand a six-run rally
by the Crusaders before Justin Ramsey retired Valpo to end the
game. In game two, ORU waited out a 35-minute rain delay and a
threat of darkness with two outs in the top of the seventh and
scored three runs to win.
Scott Campbell, Matt VanDerBosch and Kevin Lamb all homored in
the opener in support of another fine effort by Dennis Bigley
(4-2), who allowed two runs on seven hits through the first eight
innings before tiring in the ninth. Bigley allowed a lead-off
double, then struck out the next batters before surrendering three
straight hits. Bigley departed and reliever Sean Sorrow, Nick Gor
and Ramsey couldn't quell the rally until Ramsey induced Eddie
Hannon into a game-ending grounder.
Dallas Martin (3-6) started game two and trailed 2-0 after
throwing just two pitches when Sean Peickert belted a two-run
homer. Valpo starter Tom Starck held ORU hitless for four innings
before Campbell led off the fifth with a sharp single.
Valpo added a run in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-0 lead, but
Campbell's two-run single in the sixth made it 3-2. Dennis Bigley's
RBI single tied the game in the top of the seventh, and Ande Collup
gave ORU a 5-3 with a bloop single to center following along rain
and darkness delay.
Campbell led ORU offensively, going 4-for-6 with four RBI.
VanDerBosch was 2-for-5 with a triple and two-run homer in the
opener. Ramsey's save in game one was his first, and Bigleyt fanned
a career-high nine in 8.2 innings.
The Golden Eagles and Crusaders look to complete their four-game
series with a doubleheader, 12 noon Sunday.
