VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Ryan Welborn collected four
hits in game one, including an inside-the-park home run, as Oral
Roberts University defeated Valpraiso 8-6 in opening game of a
Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Bauer Field.
Valpo won the night cap 3-1.
ORU (19-16, 3-1) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with
getting a hit. Welborn and Matt VanDerBosch walked, and four
Elliott Gibbs wild pitches sent home both Welborn and
VanDerBosch.
The Golden Eagles made it 3-0 on Scott Campbell's RBI single in
the third, and opened a 7-0 lead in the fifth on David Castillo's
bases loaded triple and an RBI base hit by Grant Plumley.
But Valpo came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth
off ORU starter Alex Chalfant (1-2). Jeff Mandsager's two-run
double was the big blow as Valpo cut the ORU lead to 6-4.
Welborn's inside-the-parker in the 8th €" his first
home run of the year €" gave ORU a 8-4 lead. Valpo's
Jeff Mandsager hit a wind-blown 2-run homer in the bottom of the
inning to make it 8-6, but Justin Ramsey closed the door in the
9th, preserving the win and gaining his second save of the
season.
Game two was a pitching duel between ORU's Taylor McIntyre (3-2)
and Todd Evans (2-4), with Evans getting benefit of a pair of late
solo home runs for the win.
Welborn put ORU on top with an RBI single in the 3rd, but the
1-0 lead wouldn't last.
Brandon Sadler's home run in the bottom of the 3rd tied it at
1-1, and Marc Boggio €" taking advantage of the same
30 mph gusts which helped Mandsager's HR in the first game, popped
a home run over the right-field fence in the bottom of the 6th for
a 2-1 lead. Valpo's third and final run scored in the 6th on a
passed ball.
ORU returns to action when the Golden Eagles host Oklahoma, 7
p.m., Tuesday.
