TULSA, Okla. -- Alex Chalfant struck out 10
batters in five innings and Matt VanDerBosch was 4-for-5 with two
RBI as Oral Roberts defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan 9-2, Tuesday at J.L.
Johnson Stadium.
Chalfant (2-2), a freshman right-hander, threw just 58 pitches,
giving up one run on two hits. He retired the game's first 12
batters before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth. Chalfant
teamed with Kris Kline to strikeout 16 OWU batters. Kline worked
the final four innings for his first save, allowing one run on four
hits.
ORU (24-17) took a 2-0 lead in the third, scoring on a wild
pitch and a bases loaded walk. The Golden Eagles made it 5-0 in the
fourth on an error, a passed ball and Scott Campbell's RBI
single.
After OWU (13-37) cut it to 5-2 with single runs in the fifth
and sixth, the Golden Eagles tacked on two runs in the bottom of
the sixth on a VanDerBosch RBI double and a suicide squeeze bunt by
Grant Plumley for a 7-2 lead.
In the seventh, ORU went ahead 9-2 on a sacrifice fly by Ryan
Welborn and a run scoring single from VanDerBosch.z
The Golden Eagles collected 10 hits and drew eight walks from
six OWU pitchers. In addition to his four hits and two RBI,
VanDerBosch also scored twice and stole two bases. Kevin Lamb was
2-for-4 with two runs, the only other Golden Eagle with more than
one hit.
ORU returns to action when they visit Southwest Missouri State,
7 p.m., Wednesday.
