CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Dennis Bigley fired a
complete game three hitter and Oral Roberts battered five Miami
pitchers as the Golden Eagles down the 7th-ranked Hurricanes 10-1,
Saturday at Mark Light Stadium.
Bigley (2-2) needed just 110 pitches to subdue a Hurricanes team
which entered the game batting .322. The sophomore right-hander
struck out seven and walked just two for his first career
nine-inning complete game.
ORU (14-12) took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of
the first as Grant Plumley scored from second when Miami pitcher
Vince Bongiovanni (5-2) dropped the ball on a play at first base on
Bigley's grounder.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in
the third. David Castillo belted a two-run homer �€"
his eighth of the year �€" and Josh Lex added an R$BI
single as ORU chased Bongiovanni from the game.
ORU took a 5-0 lead in the fourth on Scott Campbell's RBI
double, then made it 8-0 with three runs in the 5th. Lex had
another RBI single and Scott Modeste laced a two-out, two run
single for the Golden Eagles.
While ORU was putting up runs on the board, Bigley was shutting
down Miami's offense. After allowing a two-out single to Ryan Braun
in the first Bigley set down six straight. Miami its only run on a
one-out sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Bigley responded by
retiring the next 10 batters before allowing a two-out walk in the
eighth.
Plumley and Bigley added RBI singles in the 8th as ORU took a
10-1 lead. Bigley walked a batter in the ninth, but ended the game
by fanning Tom Shannon for the game's final out.
Bigley was strong on the mound and also helped himself at the
plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen
base. Plumley and Lex were both 2-for-5 and Castillo finished
2-for-4 with two RBI.
ORU and Miami conclude their three-game series at 12 noon,
Sunday.
