CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami scored three runs
in the sixth and three more in the seventh, then held off a ninth
inning rally by Oral Roberts as the 7th-ranked Hurricanes downed
the Golden Eagles 11-8, Sunday at Mark Light Stadium.
Miami (25-6) won the rubber game of three game series following
ORU's 10-1 victory on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (14-13), however,
outscored the Hurricanes 23-20 in the three games.
ORU owned a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but
the Hurricanes took advantage of some shaky pitching and some
disputed calls in their favor to regain the lead.
Alex Chalfant (0-2) on in relief of starter Sean Sorrow, allowed
a lead off double to catcher Greg Dini. Chalfant then appeared to
strikeout second baseman Joey Hooft for the first out, but home
plate umpire Jim Cowen called Chalfant's 3-2 pitch inside, sending
Hooft to first.
Justin Ramsey relieved Chalfant and struck out Danny Figueroa
for the first out, but then surrendered an RBI single to Adam
Ricks, tying the game at six. Ryan Braun followed with an RBI
single for a 7-6 Miami lead. An intentional walk loaded the bases
and Ramsey then walked Erick San Pedro for an 8-6 Miami lead. Three
of Ramsey's pitches were disputed, resulting in the ejection of ORU
assistants M.J. Mariani and Justin Timmerman.
Miami then tacked on three more runs in the seventh on a pair of
singles and an error.
ORU scored two runs in the ninth on a single by Nate Griffin and
a bases loaded walk by Scott Campbell. The Golden Eagles, though,
left the bases loaded as Rayn Welborn struck out and Matt
VanDerBosch flied out to right to end the game.
ORU took a 1-0 lead in the first on David Castillo's RBI single,
and Castillo later tied the game at three with a two-run homer in
the third.
Miami took a 4-3 lead with a run in the bottom of the third and
went up 5-3 on Figueroa's solo homer in the fourth.
ORU grabbed a 6-5 lead with three runs in the fifth. Welborn
tripled and scored on VanDerBosch's bunt single. Dennis Bigley's
RBI singled tied the game at five and Andrew Collup's bases loaded
walk gave ORU a short-lived 6-5 advantage.
VanDerBosch led ORU at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Castillo
was 2-for-5 with three RBI as part of ORU's 11-hit effort.
Israel Chirino (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Miami.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Oklahoma,
6:35 p.m., Tuesday.
