ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Oral Roberts plated 27 runs
on 24 hits to sweep a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader at
Oakland Saturday afternoon, 17-7 and 10-3.
The Golden Eagles (32-17, 13-1), who could clinch their fifth
straight Mid-Con regular season crown on Sunday, extended their
current winning streak to 13 games by virtue of the sweep.
Sophomore Ty Herriott combined for four hits in five at bats for
Oakland, with a double and a home run. The Golden Grizzlies fall to
20-28 overall and 7-7 in the conference as their losing streak
extends to four games.
Senior Brent Brown had a strong start in game one, striking out
four of the first six batters he faced. He received some offensive
help in the second inning with a two-run home run from Peter Varon
(Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) to give Oakland the early advantage.
Brown got into some trouble in the third though as he walked the
first three batters to load the bases. Grant Plumley hit a
sacrifice fly to right field and brought in Andy Hargrove before a
three-run home run by David Castillo gave Oral Roberts the
lead.
The Golden Eagles then proceeded to score 12 runs over the next
four innings, including seven runs in the sixth. A pair of singles
by Dennis Bigley and Josh Lex each drove in two runs followed by a
three-run home run from Andy Hargrove.
Oakland plated four runs in the eighth inning off a pair of home
runs. Spencer Hynes homered to right center field to bring across
two runs. Later in the inning, with two outs, Varon doubled to
right field to keep the inning alive, setting up Herriott's two-run
blast to center field.
Taylor McIntyre pitched six innings for the Golden Eagles,
giving up two runs on eight hits to pick up his fifth win of the
season while Brown endured his fourth loss.
In the second game Hargrove got Oral Roberts on the board first
with a second inning, solo home run. After adding two more in the
third Bigley hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to push
the lead to 6-0.
Oakland's three runs came in the sixth inning as Hynes started
things off with a single to left field. Will Tollison followed with
his seventh home run of the season. Later in the inning, Tony
Marulli singled to center field to bring in Herriott who reached
base on a double.
Dennis Bigley went the distance for Oral Roberts to pick up his
eighth win of the season, giving up just three runs on eight hits
while striking out five batters. Freshman right-hander Billy
Schmieder suffered his fifth loss of the season as he gave up six
runs on 10 hits.
Both teams square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting
at 12 noon, which could determine if Oakland earns a trip to the
Mid-Con Championship.
