ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Golden Eagles Secure Fifth
Straight Mid-Con Crown - Andy Hargrove hit a pair of home runs in
the opener, including a game-winning 3-run shot in the top of the
ninth, and Dallas Martin hurled a two-hitter in the nightcap as
Oral Roberts University swept a Mid-Continent Conference
doubleheader at Oakland on Sunday, winning 16-15 and 12-1.
The Golden Eagles (34-17, 15-1) not only clinch their fifth
straight regular-season Mid-Con title with the sweep, but also
stretch their winning streak to 15.
ORU rallied from a 13-5 deficit in the opener and shocked
Oakland (20-30, 7-9) by scoring 10 runs in the final four innings.
But it took a two-out rally in the top of the ninth and a good
defensive effort in the bottom of the inning for the win.
With two outs, Dennis Bigley singled up the middle and Scott
Campbell followed with a bloop infield single. Hargrove then hit a
1-0 pitch from Oakland reliever Kyle Boehm (3-2) over the left
field fence to put ORU on top 16-14.
But the Golden Grizzlies didn't go quietly in the bottom of the
ninth. Reliever Justin Ramsey (5-0) retired the first batter, then
allowed a walk before centerfielder Ryan Welborn saved the day by
keeping Ty Herriott's bid for a game-tying homer in the park by
knocking the high drive back onto the field. After a sacrifice fly
made it 16-15, Ramsey then recorded the final out on a
grounder.
In game two, Martin was in control from the start. He carried a
no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff single.
In all, Martin (6-6) captured his fourth straight complete game win
by surrendering one unearned, striking out eight and walking
two.
Hargrove was 3-for-4 in game two, and David Castillo and Bigley
each drove in three runs as the Golden Eagles pounded out 14 hits
against Oakland's Gordon Hosbein (2-4).
ORU returns to action when the Golden Eagles visit Wichita State
7 p.m., Tuesday.
