WICHITA, Kan. -- Six Oral Roberts errors led to
seven unearned runs for Wichita State as the Shockers downed ORU
13-2 Tuesday at Eck Stadium, snapping the Golden Eagles' 15-game
winning streak.
The Shockers (39-23) took a 4-0 lead in the first as ORU starter
Kris Kline (2-4) last just one-third of an inning.
ORU trimmed it to 4-2 in the third after Ryan Welborn tripled
home a run and later scored on a wild pitch.
Wichita State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth
as shortstop Grant Plumley made a pair of errors. The Shockers
tacked on four more runs in the fourth, three of which were
unearned. Scott Campbell and David Castillo each were charged with
errors in the fourth.
Leading 9-2, the Shockers again took advantage of a porous ORU
defense in the fifth, scoring three runs. Second baseman Matt
VanDerBosch couldn't handle Nick Blasi's one-out grounder, allowing
Shawn Smarsh to score from second, and after Drew Moffitt grounded
to short for the second out, Wichita State plated a pair of runs on
hits by Cody Clark and Logan Sorenson for an 12-2 lead.
Reliever Andrew Collup was a bright spot for ORU, allowing just
one run on four hits while striking out three in three innings.
The Golden Eagles collected just six hits, with Welborn going
2-for-4.
ORU closes the regular season with a four game series against
Western Illinois beginning with a 2 p.m., Saturday doubleheader at
J.L. Johnson Stadium.
