COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Oral Roberts' two-out
rally in the ninth inning came up short as Houston handed the
Golden Eagles a 4-2 defeat in an elimination game at the College
Station NCAA Regional, ending ORU's season Saturday at Olsen
Field.
Trailing 4-1, the Golden Eagles (41-20) loaded the bases with
two outs against Houston's All-American closer Ryan Wagner (5-5) in
the ninth. Grant Plumley singled home a run to make it a 4-2 game,
but Houston shortstop Stuart Musslewhite made a diving stop on
David Castillo's sharp grounder up the middle and forced Plumley at
second to end the game.
ORU starter Dallas Martin (8-7) and Houston's Danny Zell each
put up zeros on the board through the first five innings before
Houston broke through with a run in the sixth. Hyung Cho's two-out
RBI single scored Michael Bourn from second for a 1-0 Houston
lead.
The game remained 1-0 until ORU tied it in the eighth.
VanDerBosch led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. After Plumley struck out, Wagner relieved Zell and walked
Castillo putting runners on first and second. VanDerBosch stole
third as Wagner wild pitched Castillo to second, and VanDerBosch
then scored on another Wagner wild pitch, tying the game at
1-1.
Houston (33-28) broke it open with three runs in the bottom of
the eighth. Cole Bruce knocked in a run with a single for a 2-1
Houston lead and after Brad Sullivan struck out and Gabe Lucas
walked , Matt Farrington singled home Bruce and Lucas scored on a
VanDerBosch error in centerfield, putting Houston up 4-1.
ORU collected 10 hits with VanDerBosch going 4-for-4. Plumley
and Dennis Bigley each had two hits, but the Golden Eagles stranded
10 runners and ORU batters were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring
position.
