Texas) hurled six shutout innings and Josh Lex (Elk Grove,
Calif.) homered twice in leading Oral Roberts University to a
season-opening 13-0 victory over Missouri Southern, Friday at J.L.
Johnson Stadium.
The win not only gave
the Golden Eagles a season-opening win, but also served as the
first career victory for ORU rookie head coach Rob Walton.
Bigley (1-0) allowed
just one hit and struck out four in his first start. Tim Robertson (Huntington
Beach, Calif.), Dane
Towery (Mustang, Okla.) and Adam Lesko (Las Vegas,
Nev.) each pitched one shutout inning in relief of Bigley.
Lex's first home run
was a two-run shot in the first inning, and he later belted a
three-run shot in the sixth inning.
ORU took a 4-0 lead in
the bottom of the first. Shortstop Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly and third baseman Boomer Welles (Beverly
Hills, Calif.) doubled in a run, and later scored on Lex's first
homer.
Second baseman Jon Tackett (Tulsa,
Okla.) singled in two runs in the third for a 6-0 lead, and Plumley
lifted another sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 7-0 ORU edge.
Lex's second homer
highlighted ORU's five-run sixth for a 12-0 lead, and Tackett
singled home ORU's final run in the eighth.
Jake Lawver (0-1) took
the loss for Missouri Southern.
Lex finished the day
3-for-5 with five RBI, and Tackett ended his first game as a Golden
Eagle 3-for-5 with three RBI. Leftfielder Ryan Welborn (Yukon, Okla.)
stole four bases and scored three runs, while centerfielder Matt VanDerBosch
(Hastings, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with three steals.
The Golden Eagles and
Lions continue their three-game series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
