TULSA€"Oral Roberts University erupted for eight runs
in the sixth inning as the Golden Eagles downed Missouri Southern
11-1 on Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium, completing the sweep of a
three-game series.
With ORU (3-0) leading
2-1 after five-and-a-half innings, the Golden Eagles got a
three-run homer from Dennis Bigley (Lancaster,
Texas), an RBI double by Brian Hanson (Kelseyville,
Calif.), a sacrifice fly from Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.), and a two-run single by Boomer Welles (Beverly
Hills, Calif.) as part of the eight-run sixth. Bigley capped the
scoring in the inning with an RBI single for a 10-1 ORU lead.
ORU starter Taylor McIntyre (
Edmund, Okla.) struggled with his control early on the sub-40
degree temperatures, walking three batters in the first inning. But
McIntyre (2-0) recovered to allow just two hits and strike out six
batters in five-plus innings for the win.
Ryan Welborn (Yukon, Okla.)
almost single-handedly put ORU up 2-0 in the early innings. Welborn
led off the first with a double, advanced to third on a ground out
and scored on Plumley's grounder to second. Welborn scored ORU's
second run of the game in third, drawing a two-out walk, stealing
second and later scoring on an RBI hit by Plumley.
Welborn later drove in
ORU's final run in the seventh with an double.
For the third straight
game, ORU's relief corps was nearly perfect as four relievers
combined to hold the Lions (0-3) to two hits over the final four
innings. Junior Dane
Towery (Mustang, Okla.) was impressive, striking out the
side in seventh.
Jeff Taylor (0-1) took
the loss for Missouri Southern.
Four different Golden
Eagles had at least two hits, led by Hanson's 3-for-5 effort.
Welborn was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two steals,
giving him seven swipes in the season's first three games. Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.) was 2-for-4 with a pair of steals, and Bigley finished
2-for-4 with four RBI.
The Golden Eagles
return to action when they visit No. 24 Florida State for a
three-game series, beginning 2:30 p.m., Friday in Tallahassee,
Fla.
