TALLAHASSEE, FL�€"Eddie Cannon struck out nine batters
in 6.2 innings and No. 24 Florida State once again held off a late
Oral Roberts University rally for a 6-4 win over the Golden Eagles,
Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium.
 
After ORU starter
Taylor
McIntyre (Edmond, Okla.) allowed two runs in the first
inning without surrendering a base hit, Kevin Lamb (Owasso, Okla.)
gave the Golden Eagles the lead with a 3-run homer off Cannon
(3-0)
 
ORU (3-2) maintained a
3-2 lead until the Seminoles (6-3) tied it in the third when Eddy
Martinez-Esteve laced a two-out double, scoring Aaron Cheeseman and
tying the game at 3-3.
 
FSU grabbed a 5-3 lead
in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Dustin Smith and Bryan
Zech. The Seminoles went ahead 6-3 in the sixth inning when ORU
reliever Tim
Robertson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was called for a balk
with a runner at third base, the second time in two games in
Tallahasse a Golden Eagles pitcher was called for a run-scoring
balk.
 
ORU inched closer in
the eight when Dennis
Bigley (Lancaster, Texas) singled home Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.), cutting the FSU lead to 6-4. ORU again threatened in the
top of the ninth when Lamb and Ryan Welborn (Yukon, Okla.)
singled, but VanDerBosch grounded into a fielder's choice to end
the game.
 
Cannon, who entered the
game with a 1.38 ERA and was limiting opponents to an .095 batting
average, gave up three runs on six hits, but did not walk a batter.
Kevin Lynch picked up his first save for the Seminoles.
 
Sean Sorrow (Bakersfield,
Calif.) picked up the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two
earned) in four innings of relief after coming on in the top of the
second. Sorrow (0-1) allowed five hits while walking two and
fanning two.
 
Lamb led ORU
offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Bigley, VanDerBosch and
Grant Plumley
(Lake Forest, Calif.) each had two hits.
 
The Golden Eagles and
Seminoles conclude their series at 12 Noon, Sunday.
