Box Score
TULSA€"Josh Lex (Sacramento, Calif.)
ripped a game-winning double with one out in the bottom of the
tenth, lifting Oral Roberts University to a thrilling 2-1 win over
Kansas and extending ORU's winning streak to 11 games, Tuesday at
J.L. Johnson Stadium.
After coming up empty
in a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the bottom of the ninth,
Brian Hanson
(Kelseyville, Calif.) walked leading off the tenth and was
sacrificed to second by Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.). Lex then belted the first pitch from KU reliever Jacob
Jean (1-2) off the wall in left, easily scoring Hanson with the
winning run.
The game was an
unexpected pitcher's duel between ORU's Justin Ramsey (Elk Grove,
Calif.) and Kansas' Scott Sharpe. Ramsey, who was originally
scheduled to go just two innings on what was supposed to be a staff
day for the Golden Eagles, limited the Jayhawks to one run on six
hits in a career-high 7.0 innings of work, striking out six with
one walk.
ORU grabbed a 1-0 lead
in the second when Boomer Welles (Beverly
Hills, Calif.) singled home Ricky Rivera (Santa Isabel,
P.R.) with two outs.
Ramsey held on to the
lead, facing the minimum number of batters through five innings.
Kansas finally broke through in the seventh when Ryan Baty singled
with two outs and scored on Matt Tribble's double to left-center,
tying the game at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles had
an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, loading
the bases with one out. But pinch-hitter Jeff Tuttle (Orange,
Calif.) fouled out to the catcher on the first pitch, and Matt VanDerBosch's
(Hastings, Minn.) bunt attempt was handled easily by catcher Sean
Richardson to end the threat.
The efforts of reliever
Tim Robertson
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) and the ORU defense were major factors
in the win. Robertson (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings,
allowing three hits and striking out three. He was also the
beneficiary of two of ORU's four double plays, including a strike
'em out-throw 'em out double play to end the eighth, and a double
play started by VanDerBosch in centerfield, and ending when Tribble
was thrown out trying to advance from first.
Hanson, Lex, and
Dennis Bigley
(Lancaster, Texas) each had two hits as ORU managed just eight
against four Kansas pitchers. The Golden Eagles won despite leaving
nine runners on base.
Ramsey and Robertson
limited KU to six hits and combined to strike out nine batters in
10 innings.
The Golden Eagles next
open a three game series at Texas-Pan American at 7 p.m., Friday in
Edinburg, Texas.
