TEMPE, AZ€"Jason Urquidez allowed one run in seven
innings to lead No. 15 Arizona State to a 5-1 victory over No. 24
Oral Roberts University, snapping the Golden Eagles' six-game
winning streak Friday at Packard Stadium.
Urquidez (8-2) gave up
five hits and struck out six with two walks as Arizona State
(23-10) took game two of the three game series from the Golden
Eagles (25-7), who won Thursday's opener 9-7.
ORU junior Rene Recio (Corpus
Christi, Texas) started for the Golden Eagles, his first start
since undergoing elbow surgery last March. Recio (0-1), who was on
a 50-pitch limit, allowed two runs on six hits in 4.0 innings,
striking out two with one walk. It only Recio's second appearance
of the season following one inning of relief last Saturday against
Chicago State.
The Sun Devils grabbed
a 2-0 lead on Tuffy Gosewich's 2-run home run in the bottom of the
second.
ORU cut the lead to 2-1
when Jon
Tackett (Tulsa, Okla.) scored on a wild pitch in the top
of the fifth.
ASU took control of the
game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Lesko (Las Vegas,
Nev.) relieved Recio to start the inning, and gave up a walk, a
balk, a single and a sacrifice fly by Dustin Pedroia for a 3-1 Sun
Devils lead.
A error by Lesko on an
infield hit by Nick Walsh put runners at second and third with one
out, and Seth Dhaenens scored on a wild pitch as Arizona State took
a 4-1 lead. Walsh later scored on a groundout by Travis Buck for a
5-1 ASU advantage.
The Golden Eagles, who
scored sevens runs in the final two innings in Thursday's win,
attempted another late rally in the eighth. Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.) drew a one-out walk and Brian Hanson (Kelseyville,
Calif.) followed with a single to right but Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.) grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the
threat.
ORU went in order in
the ninth.
Hanson was the only
Golden Eagle with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with a double
and a walk. Arizona State managed 11 hits, with two each by Walsh,
Gosewich, Dhaenens and Jeff Larish.
ORU and ASU play the
rubber game of the series at 3 p.m., Saturday.
