CORAL GABLES,
FL€"Daniel Greenwalt (
LaHabra, Calif.) struck out 10 batters in seven innings of relief
pitching and Brian
Hanson (Kelseyville, Calif.) scored the go-ahead run on a
wild pitch in the top of the 12th as Oral Roberts
University rallied for a 4-3, 12-inning win over No. 8 Miami,
Saturday at Mark Light Stadium.
Greenwalt (3-1) came on
in relief of starter Rene Recio (Corpus Christi,
Texas) to start the sixth. He faced just three batters over the
minimum and retired the side in order in five of seven innings. He
struck out the side in the seventh and fanned two batters in the
sixth and ninth innings. After allowing a walk and a single with
two outs in the ninth, Greenwalt retired the last 10 batters he
faced.
Trailing 3-1, the
Golden Eagles (14-12), who snapped a six-game losing streak with
the win, tied it in the top of the eighth. Hanson and center
fielder Tim
Torres (Rocklin, Calif.) led off with singles. Clean-up
hitter Dennis
Bigley (Lancaster, Texas) bunted the runners over and
Hanson scored on a wild pitch by reliever Andrew Lane to make it a
3-2 game. Recio -- who stayed in the game as a designated hitter --
singled in Torres, tying the game at 3-3.
The game stayed tied
until the 12th. Hanson reached leading off when third
baseman Danny Valencia mishandled Hanson's grounder. Hanson moved
to third on a sacrifice bunt by Torres and advanced to third on an
infield chopper by Bigley. Hanson scored when reliever Danny Gil
(1-3) uncorked a wild pitch during Recio's at-bat and ORU led
4-3.
Greenwalt set down the
Hurricanes (24-8) in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve
the win.
Miami took a 2-0 lead
in the bottom of the fourth. Paco Figueroa led off with a single,
stole second, advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt by
Recio and scored when Torres muffed the ball in center. Jon Jay
walked and scored two batters later on an Alex Garabedian doubled
for a 2-0 Miami lead.
Jay gave Miami a 3-0
lead with an RBI double in the fifth, but ORU got the run back on a
two-out RBI single by Recio.
Recio started on the
mound for ORU, but struggled with his command in five innings of
work. He allowed all three runs on four hits, walking five and
striking out four.
Miami's Brandon
Camardese was strong in his six innings, allowing just three hits
and a run with three walks and eight strikeouts.
ORU out-hit Miami 9-5,
with Hanson, Bigley and Recio each getting two hits. Hanson scored
three times and Recio drove in a pair.
Paco Figueroa was the
only Hurricane with two hits.
The Golden Eagles and
Hurricanes conclude their four-game series at 11 a.m. CDT
Sunday.
