MIDLAND, Texas--Travis DeBondt
(Bakersfield, Calif.) knocked in the winning run with a two-out
single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift
Oral Roberts University to an 8-7 win over Texas-Arlington in the
Rockhounds College Classic, Friday afternoon at Citibank
Stadium.
Dallas Baptist defeated
ORU 13-6 in the second game of the day for the Golden Eagles.
ORU (5-2) put the game
into extra innings by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the
ninth. ORU's bullpen allowed the Mavs to tie the game with three
runs in the top of the eighth, and UTA took a 7-5 lead with a pair
of unearned runs in the top of the ninth.
Down 7-5, ORU rallied
in the ninth behind three hits and a sacrifice fly. Brendan Duffy (Glendale,
Ariz.) and Kelly
Minissale (Murphy, Texas) started the inning with singles.
Tim Torres
(Rocklin, Calif.) bunted the runners over and, after an intentional
walk to Jake
Kahaulelio (Windsor, Calif.) loaded the bases, Chad Rothford (Fresno, Calif.)
singled to score Duffy and put ORU within 7-6. Brian Aguailar (Lompoc,
Calif.) then lofted a sac fly to center, scoring Minnisale and
forcing extra innings.
In the 11th,
Torres led off with a single, stole second with one out and scored
on Debondt's two-out single to end the game.
ORU starter Sean Jarrett (Limon,
Colo.) was strong in his second start of the season, allowing two
runs on six hits in 6.0 innings, striking out six without a walk.
Chris Ashman (Hemet, Calif.) picked up the win, tossing a
career-high 3.2 innings of relief. Ashman (1-0) allowed two
unearned runs on five hits, striking out a pair with one walk.
Minissale, Torres,
Duffy, Ben
Baker (Dallas, Texas) and Pat Warfle (Melbourne,
Fla.) each had two hits as part of a 14-hit game for ORU. Baker
drove in a pair, and Torres scored two runs.
