TULSA€"Three different pitchers combined on a
7-hitter as Oral Roberts defeated Wichita State 3-2, Tuesday at
J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Erik
Crichton (2-0) limited the Shockers to two runs on six
hits in 6.1 innings in his first start of the season. Chris Ashman
and Sean Jarrett handled the latter innings, with Jarrett earning
his second save.
ORU opened the scoring
in the bottom of the first. Brendan Duffy reached
second on an error and scored two batters later on an RBI single by
Jake
Kahaulelio for a 1-0 lead.
Wichita State tied the
game in the fourth on an RBI single by Tyler Hill.
Neither team mounted
much offense until the later innings. Chad Rothford's two-out,
two-run double in the bottom of the sixth scored Kahaulelio and
Kelly
Minissale for a 3-1 lead.
Wichita State chased
Crichton in the top of the seventh after a lead-off double, a
one-out walk and an RBI single by Tyler Weber. Ashman relieved
Crichton with one out and two on and induced a double-play
groundout to end the threat.
Jarrett relieved Ashman
in the top of the eighth and struck out four of the five batters he
faced to preserve the win.
Kyle Touchatt (2-1)
suffered the loss for Wichita State, allowing three runs on two
hits in two-thirds on an inning.
Kahaulelio, Minissale
and Rothford each had two hits as ORU was limited to only seven for
the game.
Hill was the only
player with more than one hit for the Shockers, going 2-for-4 with
an RBI.
The Golden Eagles
travel to Wichita on Wednesday for a rematch with the Shockers at 7
p.m.
