WICHITA, Kan.�€"Chance Chapman tossed 7.0
shutout innings and Oral Roberts University banged out 13 hits in a
7-1 victory over Wichita State, Wednesday at Eck Stadium.
Chapman (2-1) entered
the game having thrown just 8.1 innings all season. He allowed just
three hits versus the Shockers (24-13), striking out five and
walking three before giving way to the bullpen to start the
eighth.
The Golden Eagles
(16-12) opened the scoring in the top of the third. Jake Kahaulelio knocked in
the games first run with an infield single. Chad Rothford followed
Kahaulelio's hit with a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
ORU added another run
in the fourth on an RBI single by Carter McQuigg. Brendan Duffy's RBI
single in the top of the sixth made it 5-0.
All the while Chapman
was rolling. After retiring nine straight batters early on, the
junior right-hander twice worked his way out of two-on, two-out
jams. In the sixth retired Conor Gillaspie to end a two-on, two-out
threat. In the seventh Chapman induced an inning-ending groundout
by Kenny Waddell in the same situation.
ORU padded its lead
with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Jake Kahaulelio knocked in
a run with an RBI single and a run scored when Rothford grounded
into a double play.
Wichita State scored
its lone run on an RBI single by Gillaspie in the eighth.
Rothford and Kahaulelio
paced ORU's offense, each going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Travis DeBondt had
three hits and scored twice.
Tyler Hill was the only
Shocker with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a run
scored.
The Golden Eagles open
Mid-Continent Conference play when they visit Valparaiso for a 12
noon Saturday doubleheader.
