SHREVEPORT, La.€"Oral Roberts University swept a
Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Centenary on Sunday at
Shehee Stadium, winning the opener 10-4 and taking the nightcap
11-2.
ORU's offense supported
a solid outing by senior right-hander Dan Greenwalt in game one.
The Golden Eagles (22-13, 6-1 Mid-Con) pounded out 11 hits, five of
which went for extra bases.
The Golden Eagles got
on the board in the second, thanks to some shaky Centenary defense.
Carter
McQuigg singled with two outs and scored when Travis DeBondt's
double down the right field line was misplayed by right fielder
Matt Webb.
Leading 1-0, ORU again
took advantage of Gents (16-25, 4-8) miscues. Brendan Duffy and Tim Torres led off
the third inning with consecutive singles. After Jake Kahaulelio struck out,
Chad Rothford
walked to load the bases and Andy Bouchie knocked in
Duffy with a fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead. Torres scored on a
passed ball for a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, Torres
laced a two-run triple and Kahaulelio knocked an RBI single as ORU
took control at 6-0.
ORU added single runs
in the fifth and sixth. Pat Warfle lined an RBI
double in the fifth and Kelly Minissale had a
sacrifice fly in the sixth for an 8-0 lead.
While ORU was puting
runs up, Greenwalt was cruising. He retired the game's first eight
batters before allowing a one-out single in the third. But Knowles
was caught stealing and Greenwalt went on to retired the next seven
batters before running into trouble in the sixth.
A lead-off walk, a
single and an error by McQuigg at third put the Gents on the board
at 8-1. Tim Ryan singled to re-load the bases but Greenwalt induced
Webb into a run-scoring 6-4-3 double play. Justin Darr filed out to
center and Greenwalt escaped the inning with an 8-2 lead.
ORU got the runs back
in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Torres, his eighth
of the season, as the Golden Eagles went up 10-2.
Centenary added a pair
of runs in the bottom of the eighth, and threatened again in the
ninth but Greenwalt induced a game ending double play with two on
and one out in the ninth inning.
The complete game was
the first of Greenwalt's career. He allowed four runs (three
earned) on nine hits while striking out two and walking two. Johnny
Noland (0-3) took the loss for the Gents.
Game two started strong
for ORU, as well. Run-scoring singles by Kahaulelio, DeBondt and
Bouchie staked the Golden Eagles to an early 3-0 lead.
A sacrifice fly by
Duffy and a bases-loaded walk by DeBondt in the second gave ORU a
5-0 lead.
Centenary scored an
unearned run in the bottom of the second to get within 5-1, but ORU
tacked on an unearned run of its own in the top of the fourth for a
6-1 lead.
An RBI single by
Kahaulelio in the fifth gave ORU a 7-1 lead, but Centenary made it
7-2 with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth.
Seven consecutive hits
in the top of the sixth resulted in four runs for the Golden
Eagles. Minissale, Duffy, Torres and Kahaulelio each had RBI
singles as ORU went ahead 11-2.
Nick Jones (4-3) picked up
the win, tossing a complete game. The senior right-hander allowed
two runs (one earned) on seven hits, striking out four and walking
three.
