ORU Spooked by Tulsa; Fall 2-3

TULSA - For the second-straight match, the ORU volleyball squad forced a five-game match, only to fall in the fifth frame to cross-town rival Tulsa (22-6, 9-3 Conference USA) in a two and a half hour battle. The Golden Eagles fell by scores of 24-30, 30-27, 30-24, 29-31, 12-15.

ORU (14-12, 9-3 Summit League) was led by junior Janete Ferreira who finished with a match-high 22 kills as well as dished out 14 digs. Junior JoJo Souza seemed unstoppable, killing 15-of-26 balls to finish the match with a .423 hitting percentage. Junior libero Carol Garbato was a defensive machine for the Golden Eagles, tallying 25 digs for the night, while sophomore Juliane Vieira contributed 60 assists for ORU.

ORU was dominate at the net, posting 15 total team blocks to TU's 11. Freshman Jocelyn Swier set a new career-high with four solo blocks on the night, while Ferreira also claimed a new career-best with her three solo blocks.

The Golden Eagles played great defense against the Golden Hurricane's top hitter, Fabiola Nepomuceno, holding her to 19 kills off 71 attempts to finish the night with a .056 hitting average. But setter Julia Silva was able to snag her third-straight triple double of the season, finishing with 13 kills, 54 assists and 13 digs.

ORU couldn't seem to gain any leverage against Tulsa in game one, falling behind by four early before coming back to tie the match at 12-12. Both teams would swap points until TU went on a five-point run to move on to take game one, 30-24.

Game two had the Golden Eagles down 5-10 early in the game before going on their own five-point scoring run to tie the game 10-10. From that point on, both teams battled for the lead with the game tying up nine times before ORU would take the 27-26 lead off of a JoJo Souza kill. TU would follow that up with three attack errors to aid the Golden Eagles to the game two win, 30-27.

The Golden Eagles grabbed the early lead in game three and never let it fade, leading by as many as five at the 12-7 mark. ORU would let the Golden Hurricane stay in the match by giving six-straight points to TU through attack errors and two TU kills, but the Golden Eagles would fight right back with a four-point run to give them the permanent lead. ORU would take game three, 30-24.

In game five, the largest lead Tulsa would hold was at the 7-4 mark. From that point on, every point was a battle. This game saw 15 ties until the very end, with the Golden Eagles tying the match at 28-28. But with two-straight errors on the last two points, ORU gave game four to Tulsa, 31-29.

The Golden Eagles would come out in game five and take a 6-4 lead with two points coming from Jackie Oliviera off of a kill and a service ace. Tulsa would fight back to take the the 8-6 lead. ORU would get two points from Danijela Novakovic to tie the game at 9-9, but TU would pull away, ending the game on a three-point run, defeating ORU 15-12.

ORU will get back on the court this weekend as they travel to Oakland and IPFW for Friday and Saturday matches.
