Okla. �€" Oral Roberts University�€™s
baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and
never looked back as the Golden Eagles defeated Kansas, 9-1, on
Tuesday in mid-week action at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Brian Van Kirk (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) brought
in the first run with an RBI double down the left field line,
scoring Brendan Duffy (Glendale, Ariz.) from
second. After a Chad Rothford (Fresno, Calif.)
walk, senior Carter McQuigg (Miami, Okla.) hit a
three-run home run to left field off of KU�€™s
starter Wally Marciel for a 4-0 ORU lead.
The
Golden Eagles tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second
to go up 7-0. Jake Kahaulelio (Windsor, Calif.)
doubled over KU�€™s centerfielder and then scored
after a towering shot over the left field fence by Van Kirk. It was
Van Kirk�€™s third home run of the young season.
ORU plated their third run of the inning when Kelly
Minissale (Murphy, Texas) singled to the pitcher, scoring
McQuigg, who reached base after being hit by
KU�€™s Andres Esquibel.
The
Jayhawks�€™ Wally Marciel (1-1) lasted just 1.1
innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs.
ORU
added runs in the third and sixth innings, for a 9-0 lead.
ORU�€™s starter Chance Chapman
(Paso Robles, Calif.) did not allow a run while scattering four
hits in 7.0 innings of work. The senior righthander fanned a
career-high nine batters and improved to 1-0.
Robby
Price finally got the Jayhawks on the board in the eighth, singling
in Kyle Murphy to make it a 9-1 ORU lead.
Jeremy Hefner (Perkins, Okla.) pitched the final
two innings for the Golden Eagles. Hefner allowed four hits and one
run but struck out five batters.
McQuigg
and Van Kirk finished with 3 RBI while Kahaulelio went a perfect
4-of-4 from the plate with four hits, including a triple and a
double.
KU used
five different pitchers in the game as the Golden Eagles finished
with 13 hits.
The
Golden Eagles return to action this weekend in Austin, Texas
playing Big 12 powerhouse Texas in a three-game set. First game is
set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
