ORU Rolls to a 9-1 Victory over Kansas

TULSA, Okla. €" Oral Roberts University€™s baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Golden Eagles defeated Kansas, 9-1, on Tuesday in mid-week action at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Brian Van Kirk (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) brought in the first run with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Brendan Duffy (Glendale, Ariz.) from second. After a Chad Rothford (Fresno, Calif.) walk, senior Carter McQuigg (Miami, Okla.) hit a three-run home run to left field off of KU€™s starter Wally Marciel for a 4-0 ORU lead.

The Golden Eagles tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second to go up 7-0. Jake Kahaulelio (Windsor, Calif.) doubled over KU€™s centerfielder and then scored after a towering shot over the left field fence by Van Kirk. It was Van Kirk€™s third home run of the young season. ORU plated their third run of the inning when Kelly Minissale (Murphy, Texas) singled to the pitcher, scoring McQuigg, who reached base after being hit by KU€™s Andres Esquibel.

The Jayhawks€™ Wally Marciel (1-1) lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs.

ORU added runs in the third and sixth innings, for a 9-0 lead.

ORU€™s starter Chance Chapman (Paso Robles, Calif.) did not allow a run while scattering four hits in 7.0 innings of work. The senior righthander fanned a career-high nine batters and improved to 1-0.

Robby Price finally got the Jayhawks on the board in the eighth, singling in Kyle Murphy to make it a 9-1 ORU lead.

Jeremy Hefner (Perkins, Okla.) pitched the final two innings for the Golden Eagles. Hefner allowed four hits and one run but struck out five batters.

McQuigg and Van Kirk finished with 3 RBI while Kahaulelio went a perfect 4-of-4 from the plate with four hits, including a triple and a double.

KU used five different pitchers in the game as the Golden Eagles finished with 13 hits.

The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend in Austin, Texas playing Big 12 powerhouse Texas in a three-game set. First game is set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
