LONG
BEACH, Calif. €" Long Beach
State€™s Vance Worley and Andrew Liebel combined
to allow two Golden Eagle hits as LBSU shut out Oral Roberts
University, 4-0, on Thursday night at Blair Field.
Long
Beach State (15-11) took an early 1-0 after their first at-bat off
starter Chance Chapman (Paso Robles, Calif.). The
49ers produced their first run on a RBI single by Steve Tinoco.
LBSU loaded the bases with one out, but Chapman got Shane Peterson
to line out to Adam Younger (Cape Coral, Fla.) and
Younger threw it to second to get the double play and to end the
inning.
Chapman
got out of another bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second by
striking out Tinoco to end the inning.
The
49ers tallied another run in the bottom of the third inning.
Brandon Godfrey led off the inning with a blooper to left center
for a double and was plated on a single by Shane Peterson for a 2-0
LBSU lead.
The
Golden Eagles (15-13) could not threaten as
LBSU€™s starter Vance Worley only allowed one
ORU hit in his 3.0 innings of work. Worley left the game early and
was replaced by Andrew Leibel for the start of the fourth
inning.
Leibel
(5-2) continued to silence ORU€™s bats, only
allowing a single by Younger in the fifth inning. The righthander
finished with 6.0 innings of scoreless relief and struck out four
Golden Eagles.
Long
Beach State scored two more runs in the fifth inning to stretch
their lead to 4-0. Only one of the runs was credited to Chapman as
one was unearned.
Chapman
(3-1) was relieved after six innings by Carlos
Luna (Bakersfield, Calif.). The senior righthander allowed
10 hits but only allowed three earned runs while striking out six
batters.
Luna
did a solid job from the pen, pitching two scoreless innings while
allowing two Long Beach hits and striking out one.
LBSU
pounded out 12 hits with Brandon Godrey leading the 49ers with a
3-for-4 effort.
ORU and
Long Beach State play the second game of the series tomorrow at
8:30 p.m. (CST).
