University�€™s baseball team swept
Saturday�€™s doubleheader against Centenary by
the scores of, 9-3, 13-2, in Mid-Continent action at J.L. Johnson
Stadium.
ORU won
their eighth game in a row to improve to 32-15 overall and 14-1 in
league play. The Golden Eagles improved to 23-2 at home and have
won 17 of the last 18 games.
In the
first game, ORU tied a season-high with 19 hits as the Golden
Eagles pushed across nine runs against Centenary (23-27, 6-9).
Starter Jerry Sullivan (Budd Lake, N.J.) allowed
one run in six innings of work to remain perfect on the year,
improving to 4-0.
The
Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a
Carter McQuigg (Miami, Okla.) home run. ORU added
three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple by
Pat Warfle (Melbourne, Fla.).
ORU
added to their 4-0 lead with two runs in the fifth.
Centenary finally got on the board off Sullivan with a run in the
sixth.
After
ORU�€™s Brian Van Kirk
(Southwest Ranches, Fla.) singled in a run in the home side of the
sixth, CC scored two runs off ORU reliever Carlos
Luna (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the seventh to cut
ORU�€™s lead to 7-3.
ORU
added single runs in each the seventh and the eighth for a 9-3
advantage. Eight different players had at least two hits for the
Golden Eagles, with McQuigg, Van Kirk, and Warfle each with two
RBI.
Jeremy Hefner (Perkins, Okla.) came four outs away
from a no-hitter in the nightcap, going 5.2 innings without
allowing a hit. CC�€™s Gordan Murphy doubled with
two outs in the fifth to end Hefner�€™s (9-1) bid
for the eighth no-hitter in school history.
The
right-hander, at one point struck out six batters in a row, struck
out 11 while walking three and allowing one hit.
Stephen Pearson (Petaluma, Calif.) hit a two-run
home run over the right field wall and Chad
Rothford (Fresno, Calif.) added a two-run single in the
first inning off CC�€™s starter Jeremy
Sheehan.
Kelly Minissale (Murphy, Texas) slugged his sixth
home of the year in the second inning as ORU posted five runs to
lead 9-0 after two.
The
Golden Eagles continued to hit away in the fourth as Adam
Younger (Cape Coral, Fla.) cleared the bases with a
three-run triple to deep center.
ORU
will go for the sweep tomorrow on Senior Day at J.L. Johnson
Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
