MALIBU, Calif. -- Pepperdine received another quality start by
Scott Alexander (3-1) and Eric Thames had four RBI as No. 17
Pepperdine defeated Oral Roberts University, 10-2, Saturday
afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Pepperdine's (13-4) bats were hot early as the Waves scored two
runs in the first and four in the fourth off starter Mark
Serrano (1-1).
Serrano was relieved by
Carlos Luna with two outs in the second and
Luna was able to get the Golden Eagles out of the inning by forcing
a fly out to left field.
ORU (10-4) got their first runner in scoring position in the top
of the third when
David Genao reached by being hit by a Alexander
pitch then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Golden Eagles
were unable to plate Genao though as Alexander forced Juan
Martinez and
Brendan Duffy to ground out.
Luna calmed down the Waves' bats in the third inning by not
allowing the home squad to score any runs.
Alexander, who had a no-hitter through three innings, walked Kelly
Minissale to begin the fourth and then Brian Van
Kirk hit a line drive to right field for ORU's first hit. Pat
Murray followed Van Kirk with another single through the left
side to load the bases for the Golden Eagles. Ben
Petralli brought in the first ORU run with a single down the
right field line to score Minissale. That was all the Golden Eagles
would get though as ORU trailed 6-1 going into bottom of the
fourth.
Thames delivered for Pepperdine again in the bottom of the fourth
as Thames produced a run-scoring double to right center field to
increase the Waves lead to 7-1.
The Waves added one more run in the fifth to claim an 8-1
advantage.
Andre Lamontagne relieved Luna to begin the sixth
and allowed two earned runs in the eighth with three innings of
relief.
ORU tallied a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI double by
pitch-hitter
Colby Price.
The Golden Eagles managed just four hits in the game with three of
them coming in the top of the fourth.
Serrano allowed six earned runs on four hits and three walks in
1.2 innings of work.
ORU and Pepperdine conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 3
p.m. (CDT) at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
