Golden Eagles Cruise Past Broncos, 12-3

TULSA – The Oral Roberts University baseball team relied on an eight-run sixth inning to bust a one-run contest wide open en route to a 12-3 win over Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Broncos dropped to 0-2 overall.

After a solid outing by Western Michigan starter Brian Stroud, who gave up two earned runs and posted eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings, the Golden Eagles took advantage of the Bronco bullpen to begin the sixth inning.

With the bases loaded, Robert Barbosa (Dallas, Texas) hit a pinch-hit single to plate Chris Elder (Fairfield, Calif.). Five more runs scored after two errors and a hit batsman to push the lead to 9-2 before Elder homered to right center in his second at-bat of the inning to increase the lead to 11-2.

The Broncos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second before the Golden Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the following frame to take the 3-2 advantage, which lasted until the sixth inning.

PJ Sequeira crushed a two-run homer over the batter's eye in center field for his first career homer at ORU to give the Golden Eagles the one-run lead in the third.

Senior first baseman Michael Notaro (Westlake Village, Calif.) rounded out the scoring with a home run to right center in the eighth inning.

Junior right-hander Jerry Sullivan (Budd Lake, N.J.) picked up the win after scattering seven hits and only giving up one earned run in 6.0 innings.

Right-handed reliever Jameson Dunn (Carrollton, Texas) pitched the final three innings for ORU, giving up one hit and one run while fanning four batters.

Elder and Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) both posted two hits on the day, while Elder, Notaro and Sequeira each drove in two runs.

The Golden Eagles wrap up the three-game series with Western Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
