ORU Baseball Falls at No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, 8-3

FULLERTON, Calif. – Fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton hammered out 15 hits while holding Oral Roberts batters to only four base knocks as the Golden Eagles dropped an 8-3 decision on Friday night at Goodwin Field. ORU fell to 7-3 overall this season, while the Titans improved to 14-3 on the year.

Christian Colon led the Titans offensively, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Joe Scott, Jared Clark and Josh Fellhauer all posted multi-hit performances. Sophomore right-hander Daniel Renken (4-0) struck out nine batters and also surrendered one hit and one run in 5.1 innings pitched.

Junior right-hander Jerry Sullivan (2-2) picked up the loss, surrendering a career-high 14 hits and seven earned runs with three strikeouts.

Robert Barbosa (Dallas, Texas), Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.), Tyler Garewal (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) all posted singles for the Golden Eagles, while Furmanek and Kyle Price (Talihina, Okla.) drove in a run apiece.

The Titans jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Colon hit an infield single, and Fellhauer and Jared Clark followed with consecutive doubles. Nick Ramirez belted a two-run homer in the next at-bat to push the lead to four runs.

ORU answered with a run in the top of the second inning. After Barbosa reached on an error, Roberts ripped a single through the right side. Price followed with a fielder's choice and Barbosa scored on an error by the third baseman.

Fullerton put two more runs on the board in the home half of the fourth. Jeff Newman was hit by a pitch, and Gary Brown hit an infield single before Colon cleared the bases with a triple.

The Golden Eagles, who stranded 11 baserunners in the contest, were only able to tally one run in the top of the sixth. Notaro, PJ Sequeira and Roberts all walked to load the bases with one out, but could only score one run off a Kyle Price sacrifice fly.

Fullerton right-hander Noe Ramirez shut the door on the Golden Eagles in the sixth, and only allowed one hit in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts. The Titans struck out 13 batters total, which tied a season high.

ORU returns to Goodwin Field for game two of the series at 9:00 p.m. CT on Friday.
