TULSAOral Roberts University survived a nearly two-and-half
hour rain delay to down Centenary, 11-4, in game one of a Summit
League doubleheader, Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. Game two was
suspended in the bottom of the fourth with ORU leading 3-1, and
will be resumed on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (19-9, 9-0 Summit) scored five runs in the first
inning off Centenary (23-8, 6-3) starter Boone Whiting (4-2), who
allowed the first three batters to reach base. Johnny
Roberts forced home the first run on catcher's interference,
and
P.J. Sequeira followed with an RBI single for a
2-0 lead.
Michael Notaro ripped an RBI single to make it
3-0, and an error by right-fielder Clifford Shepard allowed another
run to score for a 4-0 ORU lead. A Colby
Price sacrifice fly capped the scoring at 5-0.
ORU added to its lead in the second inning. Seth
Furmanek laced a one-out, RBI double for a 6-0 lead, and Notaro
followed three batters later with a run-scoring single to make it
7-0.
Colby Price knocked a two-run double to make it
9-0.
While ORU's offense was piling up the runs, Lamontagne (3-2) was in
control on the mound. The senior right-hander retired the game's
first eight batters and 12 of the first 13 before allowing a
lead-off single in the fifth. After the single, Lamontagne hit a
batter and allowed a one-out, RBI single to Morgan Brian for
Centenary's first run.
In the sixth, Centenary loaded the bases with one out before
Lamontagne struck out Tell Ross in a driving rain, and the umpiring
crew called for the tarp. A two hour, 24 minute delay ensued.
Once the rain delay ended, Cliff Shepard greeted reliever Spender
Roberts with a two-run double, trimming ORU's lead to 10-3. Tim
Deering plated a run with a grounder to second to make it 10-4, but
Roberts got out of the inning when Jeff Schaffert hit a
come-backer.
Juan Martinez belted a solo home run in the
bottom of the sixth to give ORU an 11-4 edge. Roberts and Chandler
Griffin kept the Gents in check over the final three innings to
preserve the win.
ORU rapped 11 hits against the Gents, with Sequeira and Notaro
collecting three apiece.
The teams will resume play from the suspended game at 1 p.m.,
Sunday. The fourth and final game of the series will begin
approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the suspended
contest.
