Golden Eagles Soar Past IPFW on Sunday, 26-3

TULSA - The Oral Roberts University baseball team scored 26 runs on 23 hits to sweep IPFW in a four-game series on Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Golden Eagles improved to 12-8 overall and 4-0 in Summit League play.

The Golden Eagles opened the contest with three runs in the home half of the first. Tyler Garewal (Bakersfield, Calif.) was hit to lead off the inning, and Juan Martinez (Bakersfield, Calif.) followed with a double to right center to score the runner.

Two batters later, P.J. Sequeira (Petaluma, Calif.) slapped a single up the middle to score Martinez, and Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) hit a two-out single through the right side to score Sequeira.

Danny Duffy (Glendale, Ariz.) pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the following inning with a lead-off homer to left field. The long ball was his second of the series.

Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.) also added a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning, going deep to center field for his fifth homer of the season.

The Mastodons cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Chris Gottschall hit a one-out bloop single to right field for IPFW's first hit of the day. Shaun VanDriessche followed with a homer to left center to bring the contest to 5-2.

The Golden Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, as Duffy reached second on an error and scored on a Garewal single to right field.

ORU blew the game open in the fifth inning scoring 10 runs for a 16-2 lead. Sequeira led off with a single and Notaro drove him in with a double to right field. Roberts followed with a single through the left side and Kyle Price walked to load the bases.

Duffy reached on an error that scored two runs and Garewal doubled down the left field line to drive in two runs. Martinez hit a single to score a run, and doubles by Furmanek and Sequeira drove in three more runs.

The Golden Eagles added 10 more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 26-2.

Mark Serrano (5-0) earned the win after allowing three earned runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and only one walk.

Furmanek went 4-for-6 with six RBI on the day, while Martinez went 5-for-7 with four RBI.

The 26 runs scored are the most ever in a regular season Summit League contest for ORU, and the 63 runs scored in the four games are the most ever in a conference series.

ORU returns to action at Dallas Baptist at 3 p.m. on Monday.
