ORU Tops Oakland in Game One on Sunday, 10-2

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Mark Serrano tossed his third complete game of the season as the Oral Roberts University baseball team defeated Oakland in seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday by a score of 10-2. The Golden Eagles improved to 25-12 overall and 14-2 in Summit League action.

Serrano (Downey, Calif.) improved to 9-0 on the season by surrendering two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks against a potent Oakland offense. The senior right-hander climbed to eighth in ORU history with 107 strikeouts this season.

Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.) went 2-for-2 with two walks.

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Michael Notaro (Westlake Village, Calif.) drove in the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly, and Roberts crushed a three-run homer to centerfield to push the advantage to 4-0.

The Golden Grizzlies plated a run in the bottom of the first after Justin Wilson led off with a double down the right field line and Tommy Jablonski followed with a single. Serrano escaped the jam by fanning the final two batters. Serrano would go on to strike out five consecutive batters.

ORU put two more runs on the board when Furmanek posted his second consecutive base hit and P.J. Sequeira (Petaluma, Calif.) crushed his third homer of the weekend to centerfield.

Oakland added another run in the bottom of the third in the same way they plated the first run, as Wilson doubled to left center and Jablonski singled up the middle.

The Golden Eagles countered in the following frame, when three consecutive walks loaded the bases and Notaro crushed the first pitch off of the wall in right center to drive in two runs and put ORU up 8-2.

Robert Barbosa (Dallas, Texas) increased the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out bomb to centerfield to round out the scoring.
