Nine-run Sixth Inning Dooms ORU at No. 12 UCLA, 12-2

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-No. 12 UCLA scored nine runs in the sixth inning to break open a tight game and cruise to a 12-2 victory over Oral Roberts, Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

With the game tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins (15-0) sent 14 men to the plate in the sixth, getting eight hits, three walks and the benefit of a crucial balk call which extended the inning.

Jeff Burleson (1-2) came out of the bullpen to start the inning and failed to retire any of the five batters he faced. Burleson allowed four hits and hit a batter as UCLA took a 3-1 lead.

Bryce Smolen relieved Burleson but fared no better, immediately allowing an RBI single to Tyler Rahmatulla as the Bruins went ahead 4-1. After striking out Justin Uribe for the first out, Smolen appeared to get out of the inning when he induced Cody Keefer into an apparent double play. But Smolen was called for a balk, allowing a run to score for a 5-1 UCLA lead. Keefer eventually walked and the Bruins kept scoring, tallying five more runs and taking a 10-1 lead.

UCLA scored two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Cody Regis and a passed ball by ORU catcher Bennett Pickar, giving the Bruins a 12-1 advantage.

Seth Furmanek belted a solo home run in the top of the ninth to get ORU (5-9) within 12-2 but it was too little, too late.

Furmanek finished the game with three hits for ORU, and Colby Price put together a 2-for-4 effort.

UCLA banged out 16 hits against eight ORU pitchers. Bruins starter Trevor Bauer allowed one run on five hits in eight innings to get the win.

The Golden Eagles and Bruins conclude their series Sunday at 3 p.m.
