SHREVEPORT,
La.-Oral Roberts dropped the Summit League series opener against
Centenary by an 11-1 score, Friday at Sheehee Stadium.
ORU (27-22
overall, 14-7 Summit) got off to a good start, scoring what would
be its only run in the bottom of the first when Seth
Furmanek singled home Joey
Winiecki for a 1-0 lead. But the Golden Eagles left the bases
loaded when Brett
Sowers struck out to end the inning.
The first
inning run was the lone highlight for the Golden Eagles. ORU
starter Jeff Burleson (7-4)
surrendered four runs in the bottom of the first on four hits and a
pair of walks as the Gents (23-19, 12-4) grabbed a 4-1 lead.
ORU left the
bases loaded again in the top of the second. Centenary scored an
unearned run off reliever Dan
Martony in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead. Martony
kept the Gents off the board in the third but Centenary broke the
game open in the next two innings.
Scott
passkey, Tell Ros and Michael Tompkins each drove in a run in the
fourth for an 8-1 lead, and Pasket's 2-run homer off Jared Schlehuber -
the third ORU pitcher of the night - highlighted a three-run fifth
as the Gents led 11-1.
Boone
Whiting (6-1) tossed seven strong innings for the Gents, scattering
six hits and striking out 12 batters.
No ORU
player had multiple hits.
The Golden
Eagles and Gents play a doubleheader at 1 p.m., Saturday.
